Playa Gigante is a small fishing village on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast, known for its laid-back vibe, friendly locals, and strong sense of community. It’s one of those places that feels simple, but stays with you. Here, life revolves around the ocean.

After traveling through Central and South America, I came back, because something about Gigante just stays with you.

I loved Playa Gigante and the opportunity it gives you to truly connect with locals and travelers. I had a lot of fun surfing and I can recommend Playa Amarillo and its community to anyone who wants to learn how to surf. The hotel staff always respects working hours and tasks. Keep in mind the vibe is always chill at the hotel, even to the point where you can stay for hours without doing anything, even if you find ways to help. Sadly, in Gigante as a woman, I didn't feel 100% comfortable. NEVER did I feel physically in danger, but some comments and looks from locals were disrespectful.

I really liked El Gigante. It's a cute fisher village that's not too popular among tourists yet. You have one surf break in walking distance and it's a very social place where you'll know the whole town by day 2. As for the hotel, I didn't feel like I could really get warm with the people there. The onboarding is short and the organization a bit messy and intransparent. This resulted in me feeling more like a birder than a help at times. However, it's a very laid-back atmosphere, so there is not much pressure either and you can flexibly plan your shift. I enjoyed working marketing tasks.

L'esperienza a the hotel é stata piacevole e tranquilla, purtroppo sono capitato in bassa stagione quindi non sono passati molti ospiti e a causa di lavori vicino alla città l'elettricità è mancata la metà dei giorni (l'host ha comunque fornito per gran parte del tempo l'elettricità attraverso generatore privato). Il team dell'hotel mi ha accolto nel migliore dei modi e la colazione tipica fornita è stata molto apprezzata, così come le tavole messe a disposizione per i volontari, dovessi tornarci tornerei sicuramente in un altro periodo con più ospiti e socialità all'interno dell'hotel.

Thank you for sharing your experience, Marco. We’re glad you felt welcomed and enjoyed the hotel and breakfast. The electricity interruptions were caused by temporary road construction in the area, creating unusual power instability beyond our control. This issue has since been resolved. June is part of our quieter season, and Playa Gigante is a small fishing village where the laid-back atmosphere is part of the experience.
