Understanding what motivates your staff is the first step towards a more engaged team. The truth is people work better and more efficiently when driven by a common purpose.
Check out our 3 tips to engage your staff and volunteers
1 - Align expectations: ask what they expect from your place, their task and you. Understand what motivates them and what they're passionate about. Do your best to give them tasks they enjoy doing. Your staff is looking for unique experiences so make sure you deliver and they will reward you! Let them know what you expect from them and what you are trying to achieve.
2 - Transparency & Purpose: understanding the "why" behind what is done is critical for your staff. They want to feel a sense of purpose and meaning in everything they do. They want to learn how to better perform tasks in a more efficient and logical approach. But be open to new ideas and innovative approaches that they might suggest. Stating a task should be performed because "it's always been done that way" disengages and demotivates your staff.
3 - Autonomy: staff wants to feel encouraged and free to speak their minds. Give them autonomy and create a culture of "the best idea wins". They want to be part of the decisions and they don't like having people just telling what they should do. A collaborative environment makes more sense for them to participate. They want to be involved in the decision-making process.
