Barbarossa Hostel

Barbarossa Hostel, situated in a 150 year old warehouse building, offers its guests stylish, peaceful and centrally located accommodation in the historic centre of Nijmegen. Located in a quiet square just off the main shopping street, the hostel makes a perfect base to enjoy the contemporary and youthful atmosphere the city has to offer. Nijmegen is located close to the German border in the province of Gelderland, and is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back to the Roman Empire. Hosting a large university and several further education colleges, the city is full of students. Nijmegen has always been known for its active political youth scene, which means you will likely be welcomed by open-minded and friendly individuals. The city has access to numerous parks, green areas, trendy pubs, cafés with live music, concert halls and nightclubs. Large festivals are often held in Nijmegen, the most famous of which is the ‘Vierdaagse’ (Four Day March). This walking event is held together with the “Zomerfeesten” (Summer festivities) and attracts around a million visitors of all ages. Wintertime is typically windy, rainy and grey, with the occasional bit of snow and some beautifully crisp, sunny days. The perfect time to curl up with a book, watch a movie, or play some board games.

We like to think of our small hostel as one big family where everybody has the space to relax and do their own thing, but also participate to make Barbarossa a better place together. Common spaces include a kitchen, dining and living room, an outside roof terrace. We are looking for adventurous, open-minded and energetic volunteers to join our team. If you are looking to stay for the medium to long-term in a place like Nijmegen, volunteering at Barbarossa is an ideal opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, to discover Dutch culture and to have a great time in this historic and vibrant city. We don’t have preference on gender or sexual orientation, everybody is welcome. ☺ Speaking Dutch and/or German is a plus, but not mandatory.

I spent a really good time at Barbarossa Hostel. Thanks a lot to Ben (who unfortunately had to leave), Marek, Constanza, Agustina and Raphael. Thanks also a lot to Kim and Joep who opened me their doors for me and to Jamie, Dominique and Bastian for the amazing food they gave me. Nijmegen is a great little town and also is the hostel.
I had to do a bit of reception and a bit of cleaning, but no matter what your task is, it is not hard and after that you can chill all day long in their facilities.
Thanks again for everything Barbarossa Team and good luck in the future.

It was an amazing journey! Especially thanks to the other volunteers I have worked with and the restaurant staff made me feel like home. Hostel was great to stay and the city was fascinating.
My task was reception and it requires to be at the hostel 6 hours a day but since you can spend your time in the terrace, living room, or wherever you want inside the hostel during your working hours; it is not a problem. Only problem was there is no meal on monday and tuesdays there were no meals.and neither a tippend to cover this expense. Plus there weren't one beer in dinner as it was written :(

Hey Muge,

Thank you for your feedback.

We didn't write the original text ourselves, so we took out the beer part and made it more explicit the restaurant is closed two days a week.
