Barbarossa Hostel

Barbarossa Hostel, situated in a 150 year old warehouse building, offers its guests stylish, peaceful and centrally located accommodation in the historic centre of Nijmegen. Located in a quiet square just off the main shopping street, the hostel makes a perfect base to enjoy the contemporary and youthful atmosphere the city has to offer. Nijmegen is located close to the German border in the province of Gelderland, and is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back to the Roman Empire. Hosting a large university and several further education colleges, the city is full of students. Nijmegen has always been known for its active political youth scene, which means you will likely be welcomed by open-minded and friendly individuals. The city has access to numerous parks, green areas, trendy pubs, cafés with live music, concert halls and nightclubs. Large festivals are often held in Nijmegen, the most famous of which is the ‘Vierdaagse’ (Four Day March). This walking event is held together with the “Zomerfeesten” (Summer festivities) and attracts around a million visitors of all ages. Wintertime is typically windy, rainy and grey, with the occasional bit of snow and some beautifully crisp, sunny days. The perfect time to curl up with a book, watch a movie, or play some board games.

We like to think of our small hostel as one big family where everybody has the space to relax and do their own thing, but also participate to make Barbarossa a better place together. Common spaces include a kitchen, dining and living room, an outside roof terrace. We are looking for adventurous, open-minded and energetic volunteers to join our team. If you are looking to stay for the medium to long-term in a place like Nijmegen, volunteering at Barbarossa is an ideal opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, to discover Dutch culture and to have a great time in this historic and vibrant city. We don’t have preference on gender or sexual orientation, everybody is welcome. ☺ Speaking Dutch and/or German is a plus, but not mandatory.

My time in Barbarossa was just amazing!! We had a room with 3 beds for the staff and in the beginning it was just for girls, that was really nice.
there is an area outside that we always spend hours talking and chilling.
The work is easy and sometimes the time of ur shift change a little bit but they always told us before so we could plan our day.
Elfie is the manager and she is the one that we had more contact, she is sweet and honest about what they expect from you and the rules of the job.
And Jamie’s food is amazing, I recommend this place 100%. I could travel a lot when I was there( :

I had a great time at Barbarossa Hostel, I felt so welcomed when I came here, even if I was a bit scared because it was my first tome traveling alone, my fear was gone after 5 minutes I arrived!
The work is great and you still have enough time doing something else or exploring other cities. Jamie‘s food always made my day better and it felt like a little family when we met for dinner and ate together.

Nijmegen as itself is a funny student city, with the whole going out experience but also a lot of beautiful nature. I met the best people here and I would wish coming back soon!

My experience at Barbarossa Hostel was great! Nijmegen is a wonderful place: beautiful, safe, full of parks and festivals, perfect to ride a bike. You can get anywhere in the city or visit others by bike. I wish I could live there forever! The other volunteers were fantastic. I loved to spend time talking to them. Joep, our host, was very nice. He is calm, friendly and easygoing. He allows the environment of the hostel be relaxed, he makes we feel comfortable there and gives us a lot of freedom. I am grateful for the time I spent there. I miss already. These were special days.

Nijmegen it is a perfect place if you are interesting to visit the surrounding of here. The hostel is located 10 minutes from the train station and 2 minutes from the center. You have everything very close like river, parks, shopping, bar or restaurant. So, you can be volunteering and you always can make some extra activities. Joep, is a great host and the hours of work are easy. Your duties here can be reception, clean the hostel, clean the restaurant and help in the bar/kitchen. The daily dinner( Wednesday- Sunday) was always lekker, Dankjewel Jemie. The staff was super, thanks Elfi too.
