Earth Garden Tiny House and Cat Refuge

LGBTQ+ fam welcome!

I need cat caretakers for all of December 2023, then again from February through May 2024. I like for arrivals and departures to happen on the first of the month, with a one month minimum.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THEM CATS!

I’m wary of accepting solo travelers for the winter months, because you will be EXTREMELY alone up on the land. Unless you know for sure that you’re a hardcore introvert and that being alone even in challenging weather would be just fine by you, please think twice before applying for this position. I think that couples or friends traveling together would have a much better time.

If you love cats and are independent, responsive, and think you could live in a remote area with minimal (but decent) shelter, read on.

This is a great opportunity to disconnect and get back to nature. I don't mean that you'll be cut off from the world: you can get mobile data, but there's no running water, the toilet is outside, and the electricity is solar. If you love hiking, you’ll be in heaven here. Vis has many hiking trails through hills and valleys, often with stunning sea views along the way.

The most beautiful part of my land is the Sea Garden, where you can go to enjoy a view across the sea to Hvar, Brač and the mainland mountains in the distance. There’s also a rough-cut walking path nearby that can get you down to the water (the bay of Rogačić) in 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how athletic you are. Walking to and from town should take you a half-hour either way if you're sporty, or maybe 45 minutes if you're slow like me.

I live in town from October through May and going up to feed the land cats every day is difficult for me. I need cat caretakers as well as help with easy land maintenance. The living conditions here are most likely rougher than you're used to: princesses need not apply. There's hiking up or downhill through a small forest to get to and from town, and there's weather. You'll need a backpack, good shoes and a headlamp: no suitcases! You'll need to carry your own food and water from town to the tiny house, and sometimes you'll need to carry cat food up too. You'll also need to carry your trash down the hill to town. The tiny house is minimal but cozy: if you enjoy getting back to basics, it has everything you need. I want people to stay for a month at a time, arriving and departing on the first. You MUST be in Split the night before coming to Vis! You need to take the 11 am ferry from Split (or whatever the first one is on the day you travel to Vis: it's usually at 11) which puts you on Vis at 1:20 pm, enough time for getting to the tiny house and doing orientation before dark. No dogs allowed.

The experience with Shiva and the land is a once in a lifetime experience. It is very unique, having to think on your feet and deal with unexpected circumstances. The cats are amazing and the nature is too. I am glad I was able to support her project and to get a new story to tell.

It was a unique, mind-opening experience. I felt at peace and inspired.
Since I stepped foot on the island I felt welcomed and appreciated. The host, Shiva, is genuine, kind-hearted and trustworthy.
My favourite part was spending time with the cats in Sky Garden, where you can admire astounding views of the sunset. The night sky is also breathtaking as one may imagine, it's perfect for stargazing!
I would recommend this experience to anyone who shows qualities of adaptability and independance.
I made memories I will cherish forver.
A big Thank You to Shiva and lots of a love to the cats!

Our time at the earth garden was fantastic. It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature and animals. The experience is exactly as she describes it in the posting, no surprises at all. It really made us live more simply and get the most out of everything.
I’m so thankful for our time there and will miss it dearly!

My partner and I spent a month in the tiny house and we’re so glad we did. Shiva is very welcoming and kind, she really made us feel comfortable even though she wasn’t on the island for most of the month. November can get quite cold and windy, especially at night, but as long as you come prepared it’s not a huge issue.
We absolutely adored the cats and formed strong bonds with many of them. The work is easy, satisfying, and takes very little time as long as you stay on top of removing trash and things like that.
I was very sad to say goodbye to the colony, but will remember them always.
