Hostel Albania

Why would you choose to stay with us?
Because it is fun. Because you will meet a lot of good people. Because you will learn a lot.
We are working with volunteers for 10 years and we think that it is always a benefit for the volunteer and also for the Hostel. We think volunteering in places like ours is a perfect opportunity for young people to travel the world on a small budget.

I am Claas and I run Hostel Albania since 2009. We have a great team on staff and we are very carefull in choosing our volunteers as we think they shuld fit into our team.

Pros: Central location/homey
- You learn a lot about how to travel around Albania.
- Helping other travelers is meaningful.
- Volunteers are supportive, joyful & silly!
Other: Books are hand written so things go awry. Be prepared to improvise!
- The 2 meals a day didn't meet my expectations. Fine if you're ok eating mainly dry/canned foods or are in a position to supplement the ingredients provided. Keep in mind the volunteers (3-6 people) only have a 4-ft high fridge for perishables.
- Communication with Claas can be tense. However a sincere apology was always given afterwards.

Hey Fiona...
First...there is not only canned food. But there are cans and lots more for our volunteers. If the meals didn't meet ur expectations it might be that it has something to do with your allergies and all the foods you don't eat. You applied for three months and didn't tell us before that you have a special diet.
As you know volunteers have a food budget and can buy what they like to eat. If the budget is not enough to buy all the expensive things you need for your diet then we are sorry...
And as it was your first time volunteering we hope that you get a few more experiences so you can be in a position to judge us better because it's a very good place for volunteers...

A great choice for a first volunteering experience. Claas is really flexible with shift planning and easy to talk to. I was able to plan my days off and travel with the other volunteers when I asked. Always reachable by phone and has our back when needed. Claas also had some great recommendations for locations to travel to around Albania. During peak season, the hostel may get overwhelming in the morning, but other than that the jobs are easy. Really enjoyed my time in homestel Albania, definitely recommend giving this place a shot.

It was a great first volunteer experience. I made really great friends for life. Class was a great, able to teach and understand situations. He has specific humor so since you understand that it’s a pretty nice guy.
First day i got stressed when see everyone knowing what to do but it’s normal and actually pretty easy when you get the hostel vibe. In general it’s a pretty chill atmosphere and just being nice with everyone helps a lot in your shift. The morning shift can be really busy sometimes because you’re alone to deal with that. Food was hard to understand but Class use to be open!

My volunteering experience at Hostel Albania was wonderful. The balance of working days and days off (to explore the rest of the beautiful country) is great. Tirana is a good home base to be able to connect to other places in Albania.
Claas is a great guy. He is hard working and genuinely cares about his volunteers and guests. He is funny and easy to please if you work hard and respect his hostel.
The work is reasonable. At times it can feel a little hectic jumping between cleaning, reception and operating a slightly outdated checkin/booking system, but there is also plenty of downtime.
