My behavior towards my employees should reflect their attitude toward work, their attitude toward me, and toward the hostel itself. However, in your case—luckily for you—my treatment of you was based on pity for the “situation” you found yourself in while staying in Sarajevo. I tried to be gentle, tolerant, and helpful when the issue with your phone occurred, offering you money, assistance, and transportation, but I was met with nothing but hostility and rudeness from your side.
Let's start with the fact that you stayed in private quarters, which you neither appreciated nor maintained. After your stay, I had to hire someone to clean up the mess you left behind. Unfortunately, it wasn’t any different in the hostel—messy, scattered, dirty, and consistently so every single day. It seemed like everything was a burden to you, and you know yourself how often it happened that you were the only worker who didn’t fulfill their responsibilities, responsibilities you agreed to when you applied to volunteer.
You were late to your shifts every day despite sleeping at your workplace. You would show up to your shift completely hungover and unwilling to do anything. The alcohol you consumed constantly, despite my request to record it, was never noted, and the quantities you consumed far exceeded what is "free for volunteers."
I’ve been running this hostel for 13 years of my life. Everything you saw here is the result of my work and the efforts of all the people who have worked with me, including all the employees and volunteers. By coming here in the capacity of a volunteer—if I can even call you that—you showed extreme disrespect, both towards all of us and towards the work you were assigned to do, which was strictly within the scope of what hostel volunteers typically handle.
Not only was it always explained to you what and how you needed to do things, but you were also always welcome to reach out to any of us at any time for help if anything was unclear.
Out of so many people who leave Sarajevo with the most beautiful memories of Balkan Han, you should reflect on your shortcomings that led me to want to ask you to leave after just 10 days. I didn’t do it. Every day you stayed here was another chance for you to realize that I wasn’t your enemy and that, despite your complete disinterest, I tried to understand the situation you were in.
Your accusation of physical assault is so shameful on your part that I don’t even feel the need to defend myself. I just want to encourage you that, if anyone ever physically assaults you in the future, you should always report such incidents to the police. That, of course, includes me.
Personally, I hold no grudge against you. You have every right to share your subjective experience. However, such an account should also include self-reflection on your own behavior. As it stands, in a sea of people who have been more than satisfied with their stay here and my treatment of them, your opinion will merely reflect what you deserved.
I cannot recommend you for volunteering because your behavior shows you are fully capable of jeopardizing someone’s work and integrity.
