Hotel Bongo

Hello workawayers!

We are Rhianna and Mila, and together we run our hotel. Like you, we traveled and volunteered on Workaway and actually started as volunteers here. Unsurprisingly, we became obsessed with the incredible community and nature surrounding us and were lucky enough to stay onboard. We now call this place our home!

This is a unique hotel nestled at the edge of the jungle between the cities of Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Visiting the hotel is a wonderful opportunity, especially for those who want to see a little piece of everything Costa Rica offers. Volunteers are guaranteed to see monkeys, enjoy stunning hikes to secluded beaches, and join in on our games nights!

We are a popular hotel and take pride in the service that we provide to guests from all around the world. During the high season especially, we often find ourselves fully booked. There is no shortage of tasks! That being said, there is always time for fun and we encourage volunteers to share their talents and ideas with us. If you’re interested in doing something special, we want to hear about it! Typical volunteer tasks include housekeeping, reception, laundry, painting, and gardening.

Volunteers are asked to work 5 days a week. Each shift is 5 hours a day or 6 hours a day with a 1-hour break (5 hours actively working). You will have 2 days off a week in a row. Days off generally stay the same week to week. We ask for a minimum stay of 4 weeks. Volunteer priority is given to those who can commit for longer periods of time.

Your perks as a volunteer include vegetarian food, dorm-style accommodation with comfy mattresses and linens (private rooms available for couples), full use of the pool open 24/7, on-site laundry, discounts on tours when possible and the beauty of the Costa Rican jungle! You will have more than enough food for 3 meals a day, however, if you would like something special like cheese or meat, you will need to purchase this yourself.

Please note that we have both reception shifts and housekeeping shifts. Due to the clients that we work with, it is required that you have a proficient level of English to work in the reception. If you speak additional languages such as German or French, this is also beneficial. We will still consider your application if you are learning English and offer you an environment to develop your language skills, however, your shifts may be limited to housekeeping and general maintenance tasks..

The property is non-smoking and non-vaping.

If this sounds like a good fit, please tell us a bit about yourself and your skills. We look forward to hearing from you!

Pura Vida!

Each dorm accommodates 2 to 5 people. We have limited private rooms for couples. Towels and bedding are provided with machine laundry on-site. There is a shared kitchen for all volunteers. We provide plenty of vegetarian food to be prepared. Any other specialties such as meat will need to be purchased by yourself in town. Volunteers share their workplace and the community with local Tico people. You can learn/practice your Spanish and seek to understand more about local ways of living. We hope volunteers can create a warm and welcoming space for all. In your free time, there are tons of things to do and see! The bus to Manuel Antonio is only 10 minutes and there you’ll find popular beaches, restaurants, and the famous Manuel Antonio National Park. Right outside our property are networks of hiking trails to Playa Matcha and other destinations. Quepos is also a short bus or walk to get any additional groceries/goodies you may want.

Gran grupo humano. La infraestructura y la calidad del recintl dejan mucho que desear. El host no habla español lo cual dificulta la interacción tanto para la gente que viene a aprender español como para los clientes de habla hispana.

We had a nice stay in hotel bongo, the hotel area with the pool is amazing and you can see many animals. The work was easy and we always got the same days off. We would recommend volunteering in this hotel :))

My time at bongo was great. It is a beautiful place where you are surrounded by nature and animals; The tasks are varied and simple, although with the hot weather they become a little harder. I met many volunteers who are what make the experience incredible. The only negative point was that sometimes they took a while to refill the food for the volunteers.

My time here was okay. I want to thank Adrian for working so incredibly hard and managing so much with much success. The food provided was sufficient to create balanced meals for myself. The living conditions that I specifically was put in was not the same as other volunteers so it was an adjustment. The work wasn’t hard, however some shifts are worked during the middle of the day, so if you cannot handle the heat, I would not recommend this opportunity. It is hot!!! Overall, I think this would be a good opportunity if you are loking to stay in the Quepos area for beautiful wildlife.
