Ocean and Jungle living in Hamakua, Hawaii

To get into nature and help work on a series of happy permaculture based projects, have wilderness expeditions, and learn about some wild foods and live an alternative lifestyle of food gathering and sharing
and gifting. To let your phone turn off from time to time and immerse yourself in the here and now, which is always new!

We are good people and will treat you with compassion and respect, you will see us treating each other this way and we are extremely happy with our everyday vibes. We are easygoing, nature and animal lovers, and understand and respect many walks of life. We protect our areas; for you and us alike, from anything but the best! Hawaii, for me, is a wonderful culture and I hope to share my simple reality with those who truly want to appreciate it. I am looking exclusively for these people. I live more simply than some prefer. Also my life is not for your Instagram. It is very private, and i don't use social media at all. I can usually pick up and drop off at the airport but it is not a guarantee. I have a propane hot water shower. Please bring your own towel for the beach and shower. Please be prepared to ask what can be done, have some inspiration and enjoyment of physical work, and keep track of your work hours on paper so I can live my somewhat freestyle life with the seasons. No food or drinks other than water in sleeping areas. We have fire ants and they are attracted to oil, protein and sugar of any kind. This is not a hostel, if you only want to rent a car and travel the island at breakneck speed please just do this and camp or/and stay in a proper hostel as I have a simple, slow world. Often I dont leave the valley for days. I make food, I make up new recipes with the same ingredients and take naps, and go fishing when the weather lets me. My dog of 12 years-MITTS! has recently passed away and I am going through some changes and emotions lately. Hug all your dogs for me, and take them on a good walk. Much Aloha All, and Many Blessings.

Our stay at Matt’s place was a big adventure and it was a bit of an adjustment at first. Life on the Big Island is different than what we know but that was also why we decided to help Matt out. His passion for the life he leads enabled us to see and experience things we wouldn’t have otherwise. He makes sure the volunteers get as much from their stay as they can but respects their boundaries too. If you want to expand your horizons and get out of your comfort zone, volunteering here is perfect for you. He has much to offer if you’re interested.

Matt is friendly and enjoys hanging out with his volunteers. It is more of a “hangout” experience than a volunteer experience. The house is dirty and food processes are unsanitary (cross contamination etc.) There is no room to keep your own food and snacks due to the fridge (Meat juices and rotten fruit covering fridge). There is black mould in the bedrooms. There is little cleaning products. Matt didn’t inform us that there would be no access to shops etc. which made it difficult to prepare ahead. Other volunteers should be aware of what to expect here

Aloha Dylan!
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay here.
I wish you would have said something earlier.
I'm learning a lesson here.
This is the first time I have accepted someone only to be asked after the fact to host their 2 friends as well.
I apologise I did not take the time to have a conversation to see if you would fit in.
This is a chance to experience authentic Island life, that doesnt always provide the comfort that some need.
It's true that I enjoy teaching a lifestyle of harvesting from and with nature, which can get messy. However, I'm happy to clean whenever asked and communication goes a long way. Mahalos for your feedback.

Math was an incredible host. I am happy that I was able to go and have this experience 🙌🏼✨🫶🏼 It’s not easy when you are a city girl, but if you want to experience something different and learn about the way he lives, it’s a great opportunity to help you to do things you’re not used to do. The free time it’s beautiful, you’re going to clear your mind. There’s not WiFi or reception. Also, if you want to take advantage about your free time, rent a car, moto or byci. That way you can move around and enjoy more. Good luck!

Matthew was really lovely and respectful, even when I had to leave early in my stay. The experience would have been better if it was cleaner and more tasks were given out, it could get a bit boring otherwise. I would definitely recommend bringing lots of bug repellent too.

Aloha Jenna! Glad you enjoyed it even though you were only here a few days. I know i can be busy with my fishing when the weather is good and i can forget what is happening around me. Thats why i explain this place mostly as a nature get-away, with lots of personal beach time. I know some of the things i needed help with weren't exciting for you, like pulling weeds or cleaning, but that is what i need help with mostly, other than tying hooks and rigs for fishing and helping out with the goaties. I wish you the best and hope you find an experience that is more your style. Much Aloha and thanks for trying my food. :)
