Permaculture Garden on Samothrace Island

Self sufficient off the grid permaculture garden, with a free open minded outlook on life. The island is a wild, remote place and quiet. Being here on Samothraki and experiencing life in the village opens up a whole different dimension to the usual tourist experience of this island. The homestead is quiet: only instrumental music and singing, although you are free to use headphones. Daily life revolves around caring for the goats, guinea pigs and chickens, and gardening. The beach is a five minute walk down the hill, and the river is close by as well.

There are no staff. Your host is a music student. (Organ) The small farm is non commercial. You can expect to look after the animals, work in the garden, build things like water channels and raised beds for planting, forage and look after the various things needed in living a self sufficient life. You are encouraged to feel like this is your home while you are here. There are two bicycles

Evan and Samothraki are a perfect match; the island is beautiful, unique, and fascinating. The farm, though basic, has everything you need. I stayed from April to May, which isn't peak season, so I ended up volunteering solo. This made the island feel lonely and isolated at times, but it was also a peaceful place to rest and relax. The work varied day to day, and Evan is happy to let you focus on what you enjoy. I mainly looked after the animals and did some gardening. It took a week or so to adjust to the lifestyle, but I eventually enjoyed living simply. Thanks for having me Evan.

Evan was an excellent host, and the accommodation was very good. The room for the volunteers is very comfortable and clean. The work will generally change depending on the day, but it is laid back and you can work at your own pace. I’d recommend you have at least some experience with outside work, as it is best to be able to work under your own supervision. Samothraki is a very beautiful and interesting island, and there are many things to see. I’d strongly recommend this experience if you want to learn about sustainable living, or if you just want to live slowly for a while.

Evan is unique, a wonderful and reliable person, and he is in another league about how to live this life. It doesn't really matter if you don't know about sustainability, self efficiency farming, and so on, you can start from zero. There's everything you need to learn and also get the entire experience

I had a great time at Philipos’ farm. I learned a lot about the animals and different tools. I left a bit early because I met another traveller and we continued our journey together and I Philipos was very understanding. I would definitely recommend! The Bent Branch is definitely a place to i would recommend staying :)

Philipos is a lovely host! You will learn a lot and eat lots of great food! Good for volunteers who want to see a side of Greece that they will not see anywhere else and live a lifestyle that is genuinely sustainable and contributes to the health of the land. Make sure you are prepared for whatever season you visit during and perhaps buy a cheap bicycle in Alexandroupoli if you are going to stay on Samothraki for a long period of time. Enjoy!

Thanks Alex. It was great having you here, on this blustery island with it's lonely mountain, in the dead of winter. There was a good crowd here then, too. I hope everything goes well for you in the months and years ahead.
