Providence Hostel and Guesthouse

IMPORTANT: We require volunteers to be fluent in English. We are 3 friends in our mid-30s who met backpacking. We each traveled extensively in off-the-beat spots in Latin America, Asia and Europe, staying in countless hostels and couch surfing. From our love of hostels and backpacking we decided to pool our resources to create a small hostel. We only recently opened (June 2016) and we're still improving and upgrading. Therefore this is an opportunity to join us at the early phase, and co-create with us a project that is unfolding and growing. We tried to adopt what we most liked from the hostels we stayed in (for example, all our dorms currently have just 3-5 people per room). And among the funny quirks at our hostel, we have active bird feeders so sometimes you see beautiful birds from our kitchen window (sparrows, finches, red cardinals, woodpeckers, blue jays). The hostel is a work-in-progress, this is by no means a finished / polished product, we're still learning and improving every day. We're small and more like a family, so this is NOT a party hostel. We host travelers, "J1 work and travel" students, local students, backpackers and gap year travelers. ABOUT PROVIDENCE: Voted top 3 in "America's Favorite Cities" poll in "Travel and Leisure" magazine. Providence is a vibrant city, with a great food culture, many museums, and home to several top universities. Our hostel is 15 minutes walk to downtown, and walking distance to Providence's most famous universities: Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute. We're 20 minutes on foot from the rail line to Boston (1 hour direct to Boston, $11.50 one way) and 3 hours by bus to New York City. Buses connect Providence to most other major cities.

This gig can be as simple as you wish (checking guests in and cleaning)... or as creative and skill-enhancing as your spirit desires. If you're entrepreneurial and looking for creative ways to make extra money, we're open to letting you market your own special skill to guests (like organizing paid cook-outs... or reiki....or yoga... or giving paid guitar lessons or language lessons ... just to give you some ideas). Basically, just like in life, it's upto you what you get out of this experience...... and if you're looking to hone more advanced skills (like marketing... or your entrepreneurial side... or your artistic/design talents...) this can be a really cool gig. Excellent for friendly, motivated self-starters with strong imagination and can-do attitude.

The shifts were easy to do and to learn and we had plenty of free time every week. We had the opportunity to record and edit some training videos besides cleaning and check-in/check-out tasks. The hostel is close to downtown and supermarket. We had an episode of misunderstanding with one of the managers because of the way of dealing with conflict resolution with us and also unsatisfaction with the way of dealing with the volunteers. The other manager turned the things better and easier. All in all, it was a great experience!

The managers are nice and flexible. The hours of work are easy to achieve and you have free time to travel and explore the city. The hostel is charming and comfortable. It was a great experience to live! I would certainly come back.

It was a great rewarding experience. The hours you have to work are totally fair for what you get in exchange. Alina and Jo are quite flexible regarding timetables, so that you can create a schedule that fits your needs. I did a little bit of everything and I gained experience in things I had never done before like painting. I liked the city of Providence, it has lots of universities, cafes and bars to go out at night and it also has beautiful parks and landscapes. It is a city I would live in. You can visit other cities like Newport and Boston while you are here. I am thankful and happy :)
