We're a group of young, energetic and vibrant people working together, living together and making plenty of fun memories while we go along! If you think you'd thrive in that environment, you'll feel right at home. Our hostel has a reputation as a comfortable, safe and relaxed environment for backpackers from all backgrounds. Having only 38 guests each night, we like to include everyone in what we get up to - whether it's a quiet cup of tea in the lounge or a jig down at our favourite weekly Ceilidh (A Scottish dance tradition! Not to be missed while you stay with us). It's a supportive, open and friendly little hostel that you can call home for a while.
Jake keeps the place running as Manager, and our receptionist Kat is here to help guests have a great time. We look after everyone as a team, whether it's mucking in with the cleaning or helping you get the most out of your time in Scotland. We can help arrange stays at our other hostels across the Highlands! We're travel fanatics with a love for our home country and backpacking across the world (and Jake is always more than happy to bore you to sleep with his party trick of knowing the capital city of every country). Long story short, we make sure everyone who stays with us - guest, volunteer or staff - has a blast, whatever it is they want to do. We'll help keep you safe, comfy and happy :)

There aren’t enough words to express how much I have loved my stay at RMB. The work is simple and usually gets done early. There are always events going on to take part in ceilidh, pub crawl, cook up. As for the other volunteers I have made extremely close friends that I will talk to forever. It is a little wee hostel that just feels like home instantly. It becomes a family and a home for all of the volunteers. And Kat and Jake are always there to support you in anything you may need or any questions you have. I will never forget my experience there.

Everyone was so welcoming and it was impossible not to get to know and like them. The work is efficient and you often work less than 2h/day. The hostel is a nice place to hang out - well decorated and good light. They’re really invested in making guests and volunteers stays as comfortable as possible. There’s Tupperware, spices, and cooking oil. People leave behind food and hair products and soap in free boxes. There are free pads and tampons. Also, you can request a specific day off and you can get more than one day off per week if you help with events or cook for the hostel.

Our time at the Royal Mile was beyond what we would ever expect. You are welcomed with open arms and treated as family right away. Jake and Kat make it easy for you to enjoy your time in Edinburgh whether that’s enjoying the night life with live music and pub crawls or adventures through the highlands, no matter what you are looking for they will ensure your needs are met. The connections made at the Royal Mile will last forever between guests, volunteers and locals. I’m so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to volunteer at this gem of a hostel. RMB has my heart forever.

This being my first ever Worldpackers experience, I did not know what to expect once I arrived at this hostel. Right from the start, I was greeted with open arms and could not recommend this place more (especially for first-timers). The atmosphere, encouraged by Jake and Kat, is very welcoming, creating a strong sense of family and a home away from home. The location is perfect and the daily tasks are very simple. This is definitely the highlight of my five month backpacking trip!

The five weeks I spent at Royal Mile Backpackers were amazing! Everyone was really welcoming and I became part of this beautiful family.
I was able to meet wonderful people and make friends for life. The hostel and the people became a home away from home for me.
The work is really light and easy. Working hours are exactly like agreed before and sometimes even less.
The location of the hostel is perfect to explore Edinburgh and its surroundings.
So if you consider to volunteer at RMB - do it! I can 100% recommend it!
