Teaching English in Indonesia and experience the culture
Looking to travel to the beautiful island of Java, Indonesia? Do you want to gain teaching experience teaching children, teenagers and adults who are really passionate about learning English? Would you like to experience the local culture, food, people and daily life on the largest Indonesian island?
As a volunteer you will assist our local teacher teaching English to our students. We have 180 students, 8 local teachers and 4 officers and your English skills would be invaluable in helping our students practice with, and learn from, native and more fluent speakers.
We will provide you a schedule of classes, with different student abilities, where you will be asked to directly interact with the students, question them and answer questions about yourselves, aid the teacher directly in classroom activities, and also independently assess and grade students in their speaking/reading/writing exams! This really is a hands on experience with the children, who hugely appreciate you spending your time and energy helping them to learn. Be welcomed by our fantastic teaching staff and have an experience you'll never forget!
In your free time, you can explore Klaten! It is a small town between Yogyakarta and Solo, easily accessible by train from Solo, Yogyakarta and Jakarta, and only an hour away from Surakarta airport for those flying in. Visit the nearby temples of Prambanan temple, Sewu temple, Plaosan temple, Sojiwan temple and more, or hop on the train to Yogya and visit the famous Borobudur Temple. Klaten offers a lot of natural water springs with water coming from Mount Merapi- the most active volcano in Indonesia! The most popular water spring is Ponggok where you could swim and snorkel with lots of fish. A beautiful area where you can meet friendly people and enjoy some hot tea and noodles after your swim.
There is so much to do in Klaten, either stay at home and chill out with our family, or go out and explore by scooter or bike. You could even visit local businesses and learn to make Batik clothes or Bakpia cakes! Finish your day by taking a dip in the epic swimming pool in the middle of ricefields and enjoy the sunset.
Hello good people, I'm Ovick (33), father of 3 beautiful girls and I'll be your main contact here in Java during your stay. I run the English school where you will be volunteering, so if you have any questions, please do let me know!
In addition to the school, I also run a free food truck for sharing meals in the local community to disadvantaged people, which you're more than welcome to visit and help to hand out meals if you want to, and I also run a local themepark. My own children love to visit this park in the evenings to go on the rides and play, and I'm sure you would love coming along with us! I love listening to music and my volunteers say that I have a fantastic car playlist which we can all sing along to on the way.
About the School:
At the eFun Institute, we teach, encourage and transform young kids and youths to help envisage and contribute to a better future. We do social work, provide education for underprivileged children, educate people on environmental issues facing Indonesia and we encourage literacy in children.
Our goal is to provide equitable good education for all, open the horizon of the global world, and inspire others to do good things. With our motto "Never Stop Learning".
We are looking for friendly, approachable and enthusiastic volunteers to come and spend time with our family and really make a difference to these children's lives. A better education means better jobs and a better future for Indonesian people.
