Viva la Vida Family
We are looking for passionate people who can, together with the other volunteers, inspire and encourage kids in learning English and more. We would love our volunteers to help during teaching the children but we are also interested to hear about what skills you have that could help us to be the best we can. Everybody is more than welcome! So don’t worry if your English level is not high or you don’t have any teaching experience. We are one team/big family, so we don’t mind helping each other as well. You can find us and have a look into our lives through our social media @Vivalavidafamily and @on_my_way_cambodia
Side note: we are also in the process of opening our new cultural center in Koh Samroang Island, so we need people that can help us in the construction and in the realization of recycling workshops. Moreover you will be involved in daily tasks at the volunteers home such as cleaning and general maintenance.
“Viva la Vida Onlus” was founded in 2016 by Nicola Regina. As a result of donations and the work of many volunteers the “Viva la Vida Cultural Centre” was built in the village of Phum Thmey. This way the children from this rural community are provided with free English lessons and recycling workshops. Everything is created from scratch but thanks to the perseverance and the hard work of Nicola and the volunteers this dream became reality.
In 2022 we decided to move into the city of Kampong Cham, we figured that this was the best way possible to grow and to evolve into our new mission called: “On my Way”, a safe place where the Cambodian youth can grow and get trained to enter the working world.
As a volunteer, you will live in a foster home in the city of Kampong Cham, on the banks of the Mekong river and in the beating heart of Cambodia. We are currently living with seven Khmer children and teenagers that come from difficult family situations.
The “On my Way” home is a place where boys and girls can feel free, study, work and live without depending on anyone. Our mission is to offer a different future for those who do not have a choice, improving situations of degradation and creating opportunities for children and families living in a context of poverty.
We provide many different educational activities for underprivileged children: Kindergarten, English, Science and Geography lessons; moreover we organize sports and recycling laboratories. If you have any particular skill, it can be included in the activities’ agenda.
Different locations where we provide our educational activities:
• “Viva la Vida Cultural Centre’’ in the small and rural village of Phum Thmey: Kindergarten, English, Geography, Science, recycling, sports, dancing, etc.
• Kampong Cham Orphanage Centre: English, Geography, History, etc.
• Koh Samroang Lab in the rustic island of Koh Samroang: recycling and environmental awareness activities
• “On my Way” home: private lessons for the kids of the foster home (English, recycling, sports, etc.)
Accommodation:
We have two dorm rooms and each one has a private toilet, a big garden where we grow some of the fruits and the vegetables that we consume, an office and a kitchen. We will also provide a mattress, a blanket and a pillow.
We eat all together and at the same time and we have a Cambodian cook from Monday to Friday (vegetarian and vegan options are possible). During the weekends we cook our own meals or we go out.
Here you can experience the community life with shared spaces and routines with the other volunteers as well with the Cambodian people that live here.
Kampong Cham city is easy to reach: there are many busses that depart both from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. We are happy to welcome you and pick up at the local bus station.
Before your arrival you’ll receive a document that contains all the general information that you may need, including some behavior guidelines.
