Depending on when and how long you plan to stay, you may be asked to do any of the following. Don't panic, you aren't expected to do all these every week!
Preparing soil by digging, weeding. Seeding, transplanting, watering, weeding, harvesting. Berry picking. Help with the greenhouse. Wash, trim, bundle, package and load plants or produce for sale at the Farmer's Market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, EARLY. Staff the Farmer's Market booth: greet customers, handle sales, record sales.
Maintain the hostel grounds; pick up trash, debris from trees and plants, mow lawns, clean up fire pit, prune trees as directed, sweep walks and driveways. Water and weed flower beds.
We are not a true farm, only a big garden, but we do sell sometimes at the Farmer's Market. We are not certified organic but we practice organic principles. We will provide all necessary tools, and gloves.
Hours are flexible but need to be planned and approved in advance with the Master Gardener, Gay Ellen, or the host in her absence. Because the garden and grounds need some care most days, and we are asking you to commit five days each week, we will ask you to plan a minimum of two hours a day on the five days you choose, remembering you will need a total of 21 hours over five days each week. If you are asked to help with the Farmer's Market, this will take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Smoking is not allowed in or near any of the buildings. There are designated areas where smoking is allowed outdoors.
Alcohol is prohibited on the hostel grounds. Assuming you are of legal age in Alaska (21 or over) it is not our business if you choose to have alcoholic beverages elsewhere, but we ask you do not bring containers back to the hostel.
Outside guests are not allowed, unless pre-arranged and with the approval of the host. (Alex)
The host is responsible for maintaining a safe and comfortable atmosphere for all guests, and we expect you to respect his direction and decisions. (Everyone loves Alex! But remember he is the boss!)
