Jardin Secreto Tayrona

Jardín Secreto Tayrona is not your typical volunteer spot. This is an off-grid, interactive permaculture homestay and co-living hostel nestled in the lush jungle just outside Tayrona National Park. Here, you don’t just lend a hand—you leave your mark. Volunteers are fully integrated into daily life and our long-term vision: regenerating land, developing eco-infrastructure, and creating a space where travelers and change-makers grow together.

You’ll wake up to the sounds of monkeys, cook alongside new friends in our communal jungle kitchen, and gain real experience in areas like carpentry, plumbing, natural building, hospitality, social media, or event coordination. Whether you're learning to install a solar system or helping with our rainwater collection setup, your time here matters.

Best of all? It feels remote and wild while being incredibly accessible—just an hour by public bus from Santa Marta and walking distance to the Calabazo Tayrona entrance.

You’re a collaborator, not just a helper. You’ll be part of the daily operations, creative problem-solving, and long-term vision of a place designed to inspire. Your impact helps improve our systems, sustainability, and guest experience.

You'll leave with new skills, friends, memories, and the feeling of having made a difference.

This is the perfect spot for travelers who are:

Passionate about sustainability and climate action

Excited by hands-on work and outdoor projects

Curious about permaculture, natural building, or community living

Comfortable with rustic jungle life and limited connectivity

Looking for genuine human connection and cultural exchange

Please note: Our space is intentionally off-grid and low-tech. We have limited WiFi (via Starlink) for basic use, but minimal cell signal. We see this as a feature—it helps guests disconnect, recharge, and experience the jungle more fully. For those who need intensive online workspaces, there are plenty of co-working options nearby.

We’re a couple of friendly, hands-on expats from the U.S. who gave up city life to build something better: a regenerative lifestyle rooted in nature, hospitality, and impact.

Our combined experience spans construction, hospitality, event planning, education, marketing, photography, and more. We’re practical, upbeat, and passionate about doing work that matters—whether that means fixing a leaky pipe, cooking a shared dinner, or planting trees that will grow for generations.

We’re building on 5 acres of productive land, surrounded by jungle and wildlife. Our property is just a short hike off the main road, yet feels worlds away. Featuring natural pools and hammocks under the trees.

Our vibe is collaborative, kind, and high-energy. We love projects, ideas, music, laughter, and creating a culture of participation. If you’re curious, creative, and motivated—we’ll get along great.

We believe in sharing knowledge, tools, meals, and stories. We welcome travelers, creators, dreamers, and doers. Whether you're staying for a week or a season, you're more than a guest while you're here.

Unfortunately, the experience was exhausting. I don't recommend the place without a strict agreement. Communication needs to improve: only one manager speaks very little Spanish. Also, the treatment is a bit rude. The project delivers much less than promised; internet and power only work a few hours a day. It's stressful to choose between using the network or charging equipment on slow USB ports, which was a huge problem since I was helping with photo and video. We switched to the tent, but the heat and poor infrastructure were the same. Loud music took away the peace of such a beautifulp place.

We match the energy we receive, and our goal is for volunteers to get back what they put in — or more. Your expectation was clearly to receive more than you contribute. Instead of making the most of limited resources, you created stress for yourself. How does one get exhausted when many of the 36 work hours were spent not producing because of the charging situation? Other creators in the same and previously more challenging conditions figured it out and delivered greater quality and quantity.

We’re glad you enjoyed the location, nature, and the Tayrona experience, and we appreciate you noting that we were attentive to your schedule and early departure.

Your suggestion about giving volunteers clearer orientation on arrival and longer “project-style” tasks is very useful — we’ll work on making that part of the welcome process. We’re also taking the atmosphere feedback to heart and will look for ways to create more shared moments when possible.

The nature here is beautiful, and being so close to Tyrona is great. However, there were several incidents with the host that made it difficult to be here. The communication was, passive aggressive, unclear with information constantly changing. My first work day Darrell came into the volunteer dorm at 7am without nocking and I woke up to him standing over my bed saying, "Clarissa isn't feeling well, you need to make breakfast, sooner rather than later" NOT ok! Clarissa is lovely in every way, she communicates exceptionally, if it was just her this place would be 5 stars without a doubt!

Regarding the morning in question, Darrell knocked and announced himself before entering the volunteer dorm at 7:45am to ask for help with breakfast (normally served at 8am) so that guests could still have a good experience while Clarissa was injured there was no urgency or aggressiveness — it was a humble request for assistance that you misinterpreted and extrapolated into something that you feel isn't ok.

We’ll continue working to improve our communication and expectations with volunteers.

A beautiful jungle spot — expect big spiders and lots of insects, but also adorable puppies and monkeys up close. Messaging was fast, reliable, and hosts are always helpful and flexible. A steady flow of international guests makes it a dynamic place with some lovely local connection through the cooks. I enjoyed the work rhythm and delicous food. Tasks are well adapted to each volunteer's skills. Communication can feel a bit direct at times, but it's always well intentioned :) Very grateful for the time and shared learning — wishing Clarissa and Darrell all the best <3
