Birmingham Central Backpackers
We are a small independent backpacking hostel in the centre of Birmingham, we have a small team of cleaning staff that handle our day-to-day cleaning tasks as well as team of permanent reception staff which deal with front of house tasks and occasionally general cleaning.
All of our staff are former guests who fell in love with our quirky little place and eventually became a part of the team, if you decide to join the team you will be with fun young individuals from every corner of the globe! It is a great place to improve your english, learn about different cultures and maybe even make some life long friends!
We generally only accept volunteers for a period of 6 weeks or more as training is required to fulfil most of our positions. If you are looking to stay for an extended period of time we are more than happy to give you small 'vacations' occasionally to explore the rest of the UK! These are subject to approval as it depends on how busy the period is. Please note, that we do not take couples.
As both our staff and guests are from all corners of the globe you will be able interact with all kinds of people and learn about different cultures, food and languages. The common room is our social area providing the perfect opportunity to meet new people.
As most of the staff live on the premises they will become your BCB family where you will prepare meals together and socialise.
Birmingham itself is known as the birthplace of the industrial revolution and the city of a thousand trades. It is rich in culture offering amazing museums and art galleries to visit.
Birmingham is located in the centre of Britain and is known as the heart of England. There are convenient train and bus connections so that you can not only explore Birmingham but the rest of Britain.

My experience at the hostel was amazing. The support and kindness of the team and the owners made me feel at home. Every week the hostel provides money for the proteins and vegetables ( depending on the number of volunteers). Also, if you are interested in visiting others cities, you can take the buses in Coach station :) Finally, I recommend that volunteers make a weekly schedule por cleaning the room and cooking duties. I'll definitely come back to this place ( see you next year🫶🏽☺️)

It was a fantastic experience: the entire staff is friendly, Arthur, Michi and Jani are wonderful, they are flexible people who are always ready to help if any issues arise; they truly care about ensuring your trip goes smoothly. I had the opportunity to meet many people at the hostel and discover different cultures. I met incredible people whom I'll never forget. The work is very simple, I started always at 11am and usually I worked for two hours—rarely three. Thank you for this experience, I hope to see you again!

The hostel experience couldn't have been better! We received training during the first few days, the work was easy to handle, and everything agreed upon was honored. All the staff members were always very kind and welcoming; I felt right at home and made friendships that will last a lifetime.

The hostel staff and the team are nice, they respect the volunteers. It is a good program especially for those who want to have a part time job nearby as basically only work 3-4 hours a day with 1 day off a week. The tasks were simple but sometimes might be tired depends on number of volunteers and checkout rate. and usually volunteers will take turn making lunch by using the subsidy provided by the hostel, u are not forced to cook but if there is a clear cooking schedule every week that would be much helpful(the schedule is discussed among the volunteers).

The experience was great, the team was amazing to me, they were very respectful, caring and attentive. The work is intense and dynamic, but you receive all the necessary support to perform your role. I want to thank the entire staff team and especially Arthur, who was an excellent manager and helped me a lot during the two months I was at the hostel.
