Comuna de Rhiannon
Description:
Hello curious travelers! 👋 This is Phera, one of the residents here. Please read our profile carefully 👓
Our Story:
📖Our project here in the Andean countryside began back in 2008 when the two founders bought 15 hectares of farmland on the crest of a mountain plateau in Malchingui. The 360-degree views of breathtaking sunsets and powerful volcanoes like Cotopaxi and Cayambe were irresistible. Unfortunately the land had been exhausted by unsustainable agricultural practices and there were no plants here taller than a small bush.
🌳Since then, with the generous help of over 4,500(!) volunteers, we have reforested much of the land, built homes and interconnected permaculture systems, and grown a flourishing off-grid multicultural intentional community.
Our Mission:
☮️To live happy, healthy, sustainable lives while demonstrating that “Otro Mundo es Posible.” By that we mean a world where we practice zero waste, permaculture, vegan/vegetarian diet, bioconstruction, water conservation, rescue animals, care for each other, create art everywhere, grow spiritually, and learn how live in harmony with the #1 Planet!
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities:
🍽Learn to cook healthy and delicious food for anywhere from 5 to 25 people
🗣Improve your Spanish (or your English!)
♻️Learn about Permaculture, organic farming in an arid area, and water management
🛖Learn to build using natural and local materials
Take part in one of the courses or shamanic ceremonies that we host every ~2 months
🎁Share your talents, culture, and traditions with us
Befriend people from all over the world! Many of our volunteers end up traveling together.
🫵What We Ask of YOU!
Values:
Celebrate inclusivity. All are welcome here but if you are not comfortable living with diverse families and LGBTQ+ individuals, this is not the place for you.
👥Be a hardworking and self-motivated adult (18+) who is excited to share and learn!
🎉While alcohol and tobacco etc. are acceptable to consume here (we even grow our own organic tobacco), everything is best in moderation. Be respectful.
Work Requirement:
🕐5 - 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. 2 days off per week.
Work varies greatly, from gardening to bioconstruction to animal care to making compost to cleaning to making granola and beyond! There are ample opportunities to share your unique skills with us while learning new ones.
In addition to working 5-6 hours per day, you will also be in charge of cooking 2 - 3 meals per week. Don’t worry - we’ve taught thousands of volunteers how to cook delicious and healthy meals, we can teach you too!
🗓Over our 18 years of hosting volunteers we’ve developed a great program. A resident or long term volunteer will help direct you every day. The schedule is as follows:
-(6:30 AM **Only if you are cooking breakfast)
-7:30 AM: Breakfast
-8:00 AM: 3hrs of work
-11:00 AM: 30min break / snacks
-11:30 AM: 2hrs of work
-1:30 PM: Lunch
-(2:30 PM: 1hr of work **only if you aren’t cooking a meal that day)
-(5:00 PM: **Only if you are cooking dinner)
-7:00 PM: Dinner
Financial Contribution:
Since our project is self sustained, we ask volunteers to contribute economically to cover part of food expenses.
💸We ask for $3.50 to $5 per day ($50 - $150 per 2 weeks to a month of stay), depending on your economic
situation. Please let us know what is possible for you in advance. Your contribution keeps the kitchen stocked full of fruit, vegetables, spices, rice, beans, pasta, lentils, popcorn, and so on. Our objective is for the program to be accessible to everyone regardless of income. Your contribution makes it possible for those who can’t make an economic contribution.
Minimum stay:
⌛The minimum stay is 2 weeks, although it’s common that people choose to double or triple (or 10x!) their time here. Arrivals are typically on the 1st or 15th of each month so that multiple volunteers start together, although we are flexible.
🗣Beginner level Spanish or beginner level English is required
Current Projects
Aside from our daily activities that keep the community going like harvesting, weeding, cooking, cleaning, fixing things, and animal care, you can get involved in the latest projects (subject to change!):
🤲Complete adobe construction of El Aguacate
🔨Repair The Dome and The Hobbit House
💧Upgrade our water harvesting and irrigation systems (including a crowd-funding project[?])
🐛Improve and expand our existing gardens
🌲Reforestation and tree care
📝Prep for our 20th anniversary reunion
🍅Build an earthen greenhouse

If you have any of the following skills or experience, we would be particularly interested in hearing from you:
Agriculture and permaculture systems
💡Maintenance (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
👷Construction and architecture
Yoga / holistic health
🫏Animal care
🎨Mural artists
What We Offer:
Food:
🍽3x communal 100% vegan meals a day
🍠Fresh organic veggies from our garden beds. At this moment we’re harvesting carrots, onions, beets, lettuce, kale, chard, celery, tree tomatoes, zucchini, sambo, cilantro, rosemary, artichokes, beans, turnips, blackberries, and more! And if you’re hungry for a snack you can always grab a banana or buy a sweet treat from the community shop.
🥚Occasionally you can buy free-range eggs from our neighbors for $0.35/ea
Accommodation:
🛏Shared room with other volunteers (1 - 3 people) in one of our many casitas! You could be in a super-adobe home like The Hobbit House or The Snake Pit, a converted shipping container like La Casa del Amor or The Dome.
🚿Hot showers!
🚰Filtered drinking water
🧻Essential supplies like bedding, towels, toilet paper, and soap for laundry
🪫Energy from our solar panels and batteries
Community belongings:
🪘Card games, board games, guitars, drums, maracas, hammocks and more!
Community spaces:
🛖Yoga room, art room, libraries, a cinema with a projector, fire pits, a “free shop,” a beautiful ceremony building called La Caracola, acres of land to explore, and more!
Community events:
🎉Activities depend a lot on who is at home at the time. We usually offer 🧘yoga, ping pong tournaments, movie nights, karaoke, a weekly café run by the prolific 10-year-old resident, shamanic ceremonies, and more. We thrive on the energy and creativity that volunteers bring to the community. Some of these events are free, while others may require a voluntary donation or a fixed financial contribution, depending on the nature of the activity and who is organizing or leading it.
Proximity to nearby destinations by bus:
🗺The pre-Incan ruins of Cochasqui: 30 minutes
🌽The famous indigenous markets of Otavalo: 2.5hrs
🌐The monument to the middle of the world at Mitad del Mundo: 2hrs.
🌆The metropolitan capital city of Quito: 1.5hrs
…and many more!
Paid excursions:
🚗Nicky (one of the founders) offers day trips to places that are otherwise difficult to reach by bus like the hot springs Papallacta, xyz. She also offers massages in her club house for $20/hr.
What We Don’t Offer:
✖️WiFi. That being said, there is usually free WiFi outside of a public school which is about 20 minutes away by foot. And we do get some cell service out here. For cell providers, we recommend CNT first and Claro or Movistar second. Plans are all quite cheap ($10/mo) if you don’t buy your chip at the airport.
✖️Washing machine. Volunteers do their laundry by hand using our washboards, soap, and clothes lines.
What We Avoid:
🚫 Non-recyclable products, chemical-based soaps, and superficial connections. We prefer the natural way! 🍃
If you are experiencing major concerns with your physical or mental health, please be honest with us so we can make an informed choice about whether or not to bring you into our community. While we are open to people of all abilities, there are limits to what we can support.

Descripción:
¡Hola viajer@s curios@s!
🛖Aprende a construir usando materiales naturales y locales
Sé respetuoso/a.

🚫Productos no reciclables, jabones químicos y conexiones superficiales. ¡Preferimos la forma natural! 🍃
*Spanish bellow*
These days there is typically a mix of 7 permanent Ecuadorian and British residents (including 1 child and 2 teenagers), a handful of guests, seasonal friends of the community, 3+ cats, 4+ dogs, 1–2 donkeys, a beehive, and 4–8 volunteers (although we have space for 15+). 🌿
We all participate in community life: work, cooking, shared meals, and communal activities. We take turns organizing the workday, and everyone contributes something unique to the community by offering activities such as ceremonial singing circles, temazcal ceremonies, sewing clubs, workshops, and more. ✨
Our goal is for visitors to feel at home, cared for, and part of the family. We strive to create a collaborative and supportive environment where residents share responsibilities and make decisions together through consensus. Volunteers are not involved in decision-making, though feedback and suggestions are always welcome. 🤝
