La Roche
This is a wonderful place to go hiking. We live at 850 meters and you can hike up to over 1000 meters. The altitude helps keep daily temperatures cool during the hot summer. You can see very old small villages and farms or go to Lalouvesc, where there are a lot of tourist activities. Otherwise, just enjoy the forest, streams, wildlife and beautiful views.
We are near the top of a small mountain ridge. The area is ideal for hiking or mountain biking. There is a « Gaulois » site further up from us with a fantastic panoramic view. You have a good chance to come accross « chevreuils » or « sangliers » and other wildlife while hiking.
The village is 2 kms away and has a small café
There is also a XII century roman church nearby.
During the summer the village has evening activities.
La dernière semaine d'août nous avons une grosse livraison de foin. Après le rangement du foin nous faisons une fête avec pizzas au four à bois pour les amis la famille et les worldpackers qui sont venus nous aider.
I am Evelyne. I am 56 years old and i have a goat farm (35 goats) and i make cheese. I have been making cheese for 15 years now. My husband is retired and has physical disabilities and i have a 16 year old son (in the spectre of autism).
To profit most from the experience, you should appreciate living in a natural environment, interacting with nature, and other Workaways from different countries and cultures.
The air is very clean and fresh because we are at 860 meters of altitude and our farm is surrounded by forest. We are not technically considered a bio farm, however, we value and try to live by its principles.
It is a physical lifestyle. It is advised to bring strong shoes and hiking boots if you have them. Having lived in the Alaskan bush for many years, we live rustically.
Getting older, we often have more to do each day that we have time for. Sometimes things get hectic.
We have both travelled a lot in the past and enjoy meeting people from different countries and cultures.
Normally, we work from 8 am to 1 pm have lunch and then helpers are free to do what they want. We value hard work but also enjoy having a good time too !
Feedback from 2023 (other platform)
"Thank you both for being so welcoming, this was a truly excellent way to begin my travels. It really defied my expectations of what it would be like, and now I'm a bit nervous to be let down by future ones which won't match it!
I had the best time at Greg and Evelyne's farm - such a special place! Greg was always happy to share old stories over a glass of wine, lively and passionate Evelyne showed me everything there is to know about goats and making cheese. The tasks were not too hard and very rewarding, and sometimes their super sweet son Hugues joined to help. Greg and Evelyne both did their best to ensure I felt right at home; I will truly miss the long conversations, the endless supply of super yummy homemade cheese, and the baby goat Amber running around and jumping on my lap. The place is in the middle of the mountain and if you enjoy some peace and quiet in the middle of nature this is the place for you. If you are afraid of bugs, allergic to dust, or a strict vegetarian/vegan, maybe you should reconsider"Eva
.What a fantastic experience! The farm itself is very tranquil by virtue of its remoteness, the only reminders of civilisation are distant wind turbines and the occasional plane. That said, tranquillity was only ever brief as the atmosphere and socialising indoors was intoxicating (often literally). Greg has many intriguing and surprising stories to tell, Evelyne has constant cheese and smiles to brighten the day, and Hugues would chaotically enter from time to time with incredible homemade models. Their acceptance of volunteers into the daily routine of their home was beyond admirable, it felt that the trust they gave so easily was then eagerly returned by all of us. This produced such a friendly and happy environment between the volunteers and the family that it's difficult to put into words. The work itself was hard but rewarding and really provided that sought after feeling of accomplishment. I only stayed for a week but it definitely should've been longer. I'll be back to finish that wall!!! Tom
