I really struggled to review this experience. The intentions are great: there is a serious problem with stray dogs in Guatemala and Aaron's sanctuary takes dogs off the street, providing them with the shelter, food and a home. However, given that these dogs are waiting for adoption, there needs to be more focus on training them. The level of aggression I witnessed at times was distressing and scary. I felt there was a lack of guidance and safety protocols, given the nature of this work. Ultimately, I had to leave early and seek medical attention because my leg got bitten by one of the dogs.

Working at the the shelter was the most amazing thing. The way you influence these dogs lives and care for them every day is immensely important and gratifying. You love with the dogs 24/7 and your living space is also theirs, so make sure you're okay with that! Aaron is a great person and what he is doing is beyond incredible, not only for the dogs but also for the town and educating the community on responsible care for dogs. You will be dirty all the time, but after everything you will come away with an unbreakable bond with these dogs. We are even adopting on of the pups back to the UK!!

Volunteering at the the shelter was a great experience for me. I got in touch with nature, met other international travelers, worked as a team with others and got to experience living and caring for the amazing dogs. I came prepared knowing what it was going to be like, and I think that helped a lot. I knew I was going to be dirty 24/7, sharing a space with the dogs and I knew it would be constant work (but pretty chill most of the time). Aaron and Ale were super nice and great hosts. I left knowing a lot about dogs and working as a team in these types of environments. 10/10 experience for me!!

My stay at the the shelter was amazing! Big respect to Aaron and Ale for creating something like this with such a positive impact. I loved taking care of the dogs, walking them (which can be a bit challenging at times haha), cleaning them, feeding them, but most of all playing with them and giving them love. It's a very nice local environment with beautiful nature. You mostly work all day, but it's very chill and relaxing. Be prepared to get dirty tho haha. After all, you're working with dogs, but it's definitely worth it! I couldn't recommend it more! Thank you, Aaron!

I truly loved my time at the the shelter! The work that the Team of Ale and Aaron does is truly important and impactful and I'm grateful I got to be a part of that. All of the dogs were so adorable and friendly, I would've loved to adopt all of them!! Everybody was so nice and I always felt welcomed. Moreover I also liked the location! Not that much to do in Tzununa, however it was a nice change of pace, and getting to go the lake with the dogs in the afternoon was so beautiful and peaceful! The work was not hard, but be prepared to work the whole day!
