Albergue el Tulipán de Salas
In northern Spain, on the CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, we are running an albergue/ hostel for pilgrims, for the sixth year in 2023. It is located right ón the original Camino Primitivo, so pilgrims will pass here on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
Between beautiful mountain slopes, the albergue/ hostel is situated in the heart of the small pueblo of Salas (Asturias).
We sometimes have up to 35 pelgrims staying, divided into 3 shared and 5 private rooms.
In high season, more than 250 pilgrims pass every day, after sometimes having walked for more than 2 weeks. Some of them will stop to relax and regain their energy. We'll support them with healthy home-made food, fresh drinks and a big smile. We will offer them a vegetarian communal diner in the evening (for which we have great reviews!!) and an energy-boosting breakfast in the morning. Some of it is donation-based (no charge), some of it is for sale.
Our main purpose is to keep the albergue open for pilgrims, and improve it.
The house is old and creaky and charming, it was built in 1850, and it has a great kitchen/ hang-out, three bathrooms (hot water, old, ancient but with a powerful(!) spray) and a wonderful sunny&shady 500m2-terrace, with couches, tables and chairs for people to relax after a day of climbing hills.
So, why not come along on the adventure and discover your own Camino in life..
There is so much variety in each day, that you'll get to learn things you never knew, about hospitality, other people and yourself.
In 2015, Nicolaas (from The Netherlands, land of the tulips) left for Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago, a 820 km pilgrimage. After arriving in Santiago he knew: he wanted to create a place in which he could express and share what he enjoys in life: live healthy, connect to people easily and (be) inspired. After 3 years of searching for the right location, in a sweet little village called Salas, everything fell into place.
Ever since the opening in 2018, ex-pilgrims ánd soon-to-be-pilgrims have been given the opportunity to experience life on the Camino. The team of hospitaleros (hosts) comes from all corners of the world, and usually stays for one month.
The staff is Nicolaas and Yolanda. Yolanda, a proud Asturian local, has been in the kitchen from the beginning. She regularly receives applause for her dinners.
What we expect from our team is that they are willing to immerse themselves in the Camino de Santiago, both in the mind/ spirit of the guest (pilgrims only), as well as the go-to person for advice.
Once you step into the albergue, we will surely ask you for the experience you 'd like to gét, while
staying with us. And we'll do our best to provide.
