Dar Naima Fes

As one of the last remaining, medieval cities in operation in the world, UNESCO rightfully decided to make the entire medina a heritage site. Their decision was based on the need to protect what many feel represents the heart of Moroccan culture, tradition, and history. Since the Riad is inside the medina of fes, the travelers have a lot of nice things to discover at the time they arrive! And also the city has a lot of nice historic places to go and many beautiful villages around Fes like the Atlas Mountains and Chiefchouen.

I am Hannan, I am 42, married with 4 beautiful children. I own a very beautiful Riad in Fes, the oldest city in Morocco with a immense historical and cultural legacy, not to mention the tasty local cuisine. I own it for 12 years, and I am currently looking for a helping hand since the Riad has been shut down during the pandemic. Now I am reopening and I want to give the riad a fresh and new life.

My experience was great, all the staff behaved incredible with me. It was my first experience as a volunteer and I was able to meet and interact with visitors of different nationalities, making great friends. Shukran

The stay at Hannah's place was a nice experience for me overall. The main task given to me was to help with the breakfast for guests and it was not so difficult to do but not so interesting. However, the host and the staff were nice and welcoming. And the interior design of the accomodation had truly traditional Moroccan vibes, I enjoyed staying in that place. Plus, the local people were very hospitable and welcoming, so I had a great time there.

I worked preparing and serving breakfast, doing general repairs, housekeeping and cleaning. Unfortunately, working hours and days off weren’t respected and several times I worked more than the agreed 5 hours, in addition to having only 1 off during the 2 weeks I was there. All of this could be fixed easily with communication and more organization on the part of the manager Hanna, but when I proposed a better organization of working hours the answer I got was “if you want to volunteer here you have to do what I say, or get out". I felt a little unsafe during my stay after that.

I am extremely disappointed with this volunteering. At no time did I feel welcome, I was not respected by the staff, there was no clarity about work hours.
At no point was I given a weekly work shift. I had my bed sold to other guests and was placed, surprisingly, in a laundry room.
There was no place where I could safely leave my things.
I spent one of the worst nights of my life in this place. Needless to say, there was no bathroom and I had to ask to use the bathroom in the private rooms.
I felt completely vulnerable and would not recommend the experience to anyone.

My time in Dar Naima was really disappointing. I didn’t feel respected by the employees, the schedules of work was not clear and the place got full when I arrive so my host sold my bed in the shared room to other guests and she placed me in her mom’s house who didn’t speak English at all. I slept for 4 nights in a couch. I didn’t feel comfortable at all and I didn’t have a proper bathroom! I felt really disrespected. When the other volunteer arrived and she placed him in the laundry room, I knew it was the time for me to leave that place. I really do not recommend this place for anyone.
