Hamakua Guesthouse and Camping Cabanas

It is a small family business and we take pride in offering accommodations that are both exceptional and reasonably priced. Everyone should be able to come visit this astonishing island. Hosting Worldpackers participants provides yet another avenue for people to experience Hawaii, regardless of their income bracket. Our guests come from every corner of the world and our place is frequented the most by European visitors, who are looking for a more genuine, less touristic experience.

I find it disheartening that in many hotels, social interaction among guests is not supported and is often discouraged. It is important that social interaction among people remains a fundamental component of travelling to a new place, so we enthusiastically encourage it here.

My time spent here will definitely hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life. The managers were THE best and the other workawayers were amazing as well. Not only that, but you get to meet guests from all over the world as well! The work was simple and everyone works together to get stuff done. I would recommend this experience to everyone!

hola.

Host is a great guy, very patient and understanding. His property exceeded all my expectations. I was so blessed to be here! Met some really amazing people! Only word of advice is to be careful who you trust. As some of my coworkers were very deceiving and manipulative and might not have your best interest at heart. The owner does his absolute best to read between the lines and address issues when they arise, but he can only know and do so much when he only really spends a few hours with us a week. Overall id recommend the place as people are always coming and going, fake people r everywhere

The host only show up for the weekly meetings and we don't have any contact whit him beside this. The tasks are easy however the 2 days off and the 14 hours weekly doesn't match with the reality because you can only have day off if f you don't have any check outs on the day. The person in charge of management was disorganized, and there were a lot of misunderstanding between her and some volunteers, it was a awkward environment.Every time you use the car you need to fill up and only the manager can drive, which is ok, but it was always a problem because not everyone have cash.

Though I am tasked with screening and selecting volunteers, I am not your direct supervisor that you will work with every day. I'm sorry if that was somehow a surprise. It feels misleading to say "we don't have any contact (with) him beside this" as I was in daily contact with you via our volunteer group chat and available privately at any time as well. Days off range from 1 to 4 per week and are entirely dependent on the number of guest checkouts on each given day (which is beyond our control). 2 days off per week is just an average. As we mentioned in the listing, transportation is not provided other that the once weekly trip to Hilo for you to stock up on groceries/supplies. For all other adventuring trips, you must be prepared to chip in for gas money as that is only fair. You had the option to use Venmo, PayPal, or CashApp as an alternative to contributing with cash. I'm sorry to hear you felt a clash with your supervisor's management style. You stayed through a time when she was learning the ins and outs of the job and becoming more organized. Overall, your comments read surprisingly negatively from someone who seemed to have a good time being here and staying with us. I wish you would have taken a moment to share some of the positive things you experienced while being here as well.

My stay at the hamakua house went above and beyond what I could have expected. The workers and guests have been some of the best people I have ever met. There are so many things to do all around the island as long as you get your work done for the day. Team work is key here and you are encouraged to help other volunteers when you can. The work instructions are straight to the point and if you follow them you will be in perfect shape! I definitely would recommend staying here!
