Lochside Hostel

We're a young and energetic team of backpackers wanting the help create the best environment for other backpackers to enjoy! At Lochside, we have been welcoming volunteers from all across the world for over four years. Located right on the banks of Loch Ness, Lochside is in a beautiful spot and is the perfect place to relax, immerse yourself in the beautiful highland scenery and meet new people.

The work is very straightforward (for more details see position description!) and averages 2-3 hours per day, giving our volunteers as much time as possible to enjoy the hostel and explore the area. Volunteers will stay in a shared four-bed staff dorm and will have access to all the shared facilities (kitchen/laundry etc.) If you are able to stay for at least 4 weeks we can also offer you an allowance for food.

Our hostel is fairly remote (a 15 minute drive from the nearest food shop!), so most days are spent walking or relaxing in the hostel. However, we have a bus stop right outside our front door, so it is very easy to travel into Inverness or beyond in your spare time. In fact, within two hours it is possible to get to Fort William, the Isle of Skye or Oban, all by bus. Our hostel has always been reliant on young volunteers and is very laid back; if you're looking for a party atmosphere we may not be for you but if you are wanting to unwind and relax for a month (without very good Wi-Fi!) Lochside is the perfect choice!

Ideally, we are looking for volunteers to stay for a month at least but we are flexible if it isn't possible to come for the entire month. We really love the hostel and hope that you will too! To see what we get up to here at Lochside, take a look on our Instagram @lochsidehostel : )

I’ve really enjoyed my time at the hostel, Becca was really helpful with all the info about the camp and all I needed to know before to arrive. Jake was great, always helpful, willing to teach and talk. We’ve shared really with moments. The workload is easy and we all work together always. It feels like family here. Looking forward to coming back. Jack thank you for everything. All the best in Mexico

It was my first experience as a volunteer and everything was nice. The Jake and volunteers are welcome, the nights were funny with plays and once a week Scotland folk dancing. The landscape is and the tasks are easy.
The hostel is ideal for someone who likes stay close the nature. I recommend it, absolutely

The location is magnificent, the lake is beautiful although terribly 🥶 for me, the views around are astonishing , the ceilidh dance nights were incredibly fun. The tasks are very easy and I got properly trained beforehand , many thanks to Jake for the flexibility so that I could do my classes, I was very lucky with the group of volunteers that I had to share. 100% recommended!

My time at the Lochside Hostel was amazing! The other volunteers were very welcoming and helpful! I got to meet new people and new stories from all around the world. Jake was really nice and considerate and was very nice to work with! The whole work is easy and for a short amount of time so you have almost the whole day to explore the unbelievably-breathtaking nature and landscapes and of course- the Loch!
The hostel itself is so cozy and inviting! Would definitely recommend you going there! It’ll be an experience I’ll never forget and will always cherish!

Lochside Hostel was a brilliant experience. The host immediately made me feel at ease and super welcome - after 2 weeks, the team quickly bonded and it was hard leaving them behind! As this is quite remote, you spend a lot of time indoors or in the surrounding outdoor areas with each other.

This is a great location if you would like to wind down, relax and enjoy a beautiful part of Scotland. Activities usually include hiking, bathing in the ‘private’ Loch Ness beach or taking the bus to nearby cities. Working hours are very much respected and the tasks are reasonable.
