Lochside Hostel - Loch Ness

We're a young and energetic team of backpackers wanting the help create the best environment for other backpackers to enjoy! At Lochside, we have been welcoming volunteers from all across the world for over four years. With events every morning and night, you're sure to have a legendary backpackers experience.

We offer a mix of shifts from housekeeping, to reception, and running events for our guests. Volunteers will stay in a shared four-bed staff dorm and will have access to all the shared facilities (kitchen/laundry etc.)

Our hostel is fairly remote (a 15 minute drive from the nearest food shop!), so most days are spent walking or relaxing in the hostel. However, we have a bus stop right outside our front door, so it is very easy to travel into Inverness or beyond in your spare time. In fact, within two hours it is possible to get to Fort William, the Isle of Skye or Oban, all by bus. Our hostel has always been reliant on young volunteers and is very laid back. We host our famous Scottish Folk Dancing Parties twice a week, as well as loads of other fun things to do!

Hi, I'm Jay. I've been managing hostels in Scotland for the past few years and before that backpacked all around Europe and Central America. I love meeting other people with a passion for travel, swapping stories, and making unforgettable memories with our guests & volunteers. I'm a proud Scot who (sadly) grew up near London, and moved back up when I was eighteen. I run Scottish Folk Dance Parties (called Ceilidhs) and hike a lot in my spare time. I hope you'll love Lochside as much as I do! Volunteering at the Loch Ness Hostel was a fantastic experience. Not only that they have an amazing pool table but also the location and the whole atmosphere of the hostel is amazing. Jay and Noelig are the sweetest managers you can ever get. They and the other volunteers made my stay unforgettable and I’ll definitely come back in the future!

This has been my favourite volunteering experience so far. The work isn’t difficult and everyone at the hostel is so nice. The area is really beautiful and I learnt a lot about the highlands during my time here. I definitely recommend this experience :)

My second year at Lochside and it won't be my last! It really feels like a second home and the volunteers like family. Jay, Noelig and all the other volunteers do a fantastic job of putting on events for the guests and volunteers every day, so between that and the occasional group outings, parties and surrounding nature, there's never a dull day.

An unbelievable hostel with an incredible location at the shore of Loch Ness. It was everything I could have wished for and more. The service is amazing and all the activities organised by the hostel are both fun experiences and a great way to make long lasting friendships. Also a great way to experience different cultures and to do so in a magical location. Truly magnificent

One of the best experiences I’ve ever had! Thanks Jay for your support and kindness in every step since I arrived. The shifts are very simple and if you have any concerns or questions you can ask them. I recommend this place if you want to volunteer and have fun at the same time.
Finally, I met people I won’t forget and I hope to see all them soon 🫶
