Miyajima Guesthouse Mikuniya

Come and join our team!

In our guesthouse, we need helpers to do the cleaning tasks 5 days/week or receptionists 2 days/week depending on whether they can speak Japanese or not.
If you want to help in another field, such as creating videos or advertisements on social media, that would be incredible. Accommodation is across the road from the guesthouse, and you will be sharing with other travellers like yourself. A shared kitchen, and free WiFi are provided.

Hello, my name is Junya and I was born in Hiroshima. I have run this guesthouse since 2013. I love travel, and have visited France, Spain, South Korea, and China. I can speak Japanese and English. During COVID, the customers were mainly Japanese, but as soon as the borders opened, lots of foreign customers came back. Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant Torii gate. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island. The island can be reached by ferry [one every 5/10 minutes from 8AM to 6PM, first at 6:25 and last at 22:42] . The main part of the island is accessible by walking or biking but you can also come with your car [extra fees for bike/car for the ferry’s fare]. There are nice hikes to do around the island with a wonderful view of the west of Hiroshima Prefecture. You will see small waterfalls, shrines and wild animal such as deer, weasel or tanuki if you’re lucky enough. Due to recent events in Japan, we can only accept volunteers who have a valid Working Holiday Visa. This is a requirement by law and unfortunately we cannot change it. If you have a Working Holiday Visa, then please get in touch. We would love to meet you and work together.

My stay on Miyajima island was very relaxing and peaceful. The work was not too hard, but kept me busy and especially doing reception shifts turned out to be a very fun experience! This place is perfect if you’re looking to connect with nature, climb a (small) mountain, and be surrounded by the beautiful sight of traditional Japanese architecture and landscape. I recommend going to the beach for a little break from the very touristy town! It’s busy during the day and VERY quiet after dark so don’t go looking for nightlife…
Junya is a great host and always looking to improve your experience!

Staying at Mikuniya with Junya has been an incredible experience.
The days are very relaxed, with tasks like cleaning and simple laundry duties completed in 3-4 hours. Some nights you can sit at reception and work on your own projects while you await guests to arrive.
Junya and Ryu are both absolute legends, very friendly, respectful, and kind and they take very good care of you.

During your days you can hike Mount Misen, or just relax and people watch in the beautiful town of Miyajima. It really is peaceful and a nice place to destress and kinda of just do a reset on your brain.
