Miyajima Guesthouse Mikuniya

Come and join our team!

In our guesthouse, we need helpers to do either cleaning, cooking dinner, or reception duties for about 5 days/week depending on whether they can speak Japanese or not.
If you want to help in another field, such as creating videos or advertisements on social media, that would be incredible. Accommodation is across the road from the guesthouse, and you will be sharing with other travellers like yourself. A shared kitchen, and free WiFi are provided.

Hello, my name is Junya and I was born in Hiroshima. I have run this guesthouse since 2013. I love travel, and have visited France, Spain, South Korea, and China. I can speak Japanese and English. During COVID, the customers were mainly Japanese, but as soon as the borders opened, lots of foreign customers came back. Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant Torii gate. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island. The island can be reached by ferry [one every 5/10 minutes from 8AM to 6PM, first at 6:25 and last at 22:42] . The main part of the island is accessible by walking or biking but you can also come with your car [extra fees for bike/car for the ferry’s fare]. There are nice hikes to do around the island with a wonderful view of the west of Hiroshima Prefecture. You will see small waterfalls, shrines and wild animal such as deer, weasel or tanuki if you’re lucky enough. Due to recent events in Japan, we can only accept volunteers who have a valid Working Holiday Visa. This is a requirement by law and unfortunately we cannot change it. If you have a Working Holiday Visa, then please get in touch. We would love to meet you and work together.

The guesthouse was a cozy place to stay at. Junya-san was flexible with work hours if needed and always wanted to make the staff feel comfortable and enjoy themselves during their stay. Living with the other staff members gives you an opportunity to make life long friendships with people like yourself. There are a lot of different events held on the island, which helps with getting to know the Japanese culture as well as getting to experience something new. On your day offs you can easily go explore some other cities nearby as well.

It was a great time at Mikunya!
The tasks are flexible and you learn a lot. I thought it was great that you even had the responsible tasks, such as reception.
All in all, it's a very nice guest house, you feel very comfortable and in combination with the people you can have a great time.
I really enjoyed my stay!

As my first volunteering, Mikuniya was wonderful!
Working with Junya san was quite enjoyable, as he tries to get to know each volunteer and tries to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.
I think Junya san is a bit of an introvert, but he is quite flexible, considerate, respectful, and kind. And everyone was very nice as well :)
The mountain has exceptional views, and Hiroshima isn't far from Miyajima, so you can enjoy your days off in various ways!
I really have nothing but good things to say of the experience at Mikuniya!

It was perfect! The house we stayed at was quite old but everyone was so welcoming it felt like a schooltrip! Junya-san was lovely and very understanding and the hours were quite flexible. The guesthouse and the island were mesmerising. I would recommend this experience to anyone!
