Royal Mile Backpackers

We're a group of young, energetic and vibrant people working together, living together and making plenty of fun memories while we go along! If you think you'd thrive in that environment, you'll feel right at home. Our hostel has a reputation as a comfortable, safe and relaxed environment for backpackers from all backgrounds.

Having only 38 guests each night, we like to include everyone in what we get up to - whether it's a quiet cup of tea in the lounge or a jig down at our favourite weekly Ceilidh (A Scottish dance tradition! Not to be missed while you stay with us). It's a supportive, open and friendly little hostel that you can call home for a while.

Kat keeps the place running as Manager, and our assistant manager Jack is here to help guests have a great time. We look after everyone as a team, whether it's mucking in with the cleaning or helping you get the most out of your time in Scotland. We can help arrange stays at our other hostels across the Highlands! We're travel fanatics with a love for our home country and backpacking across the world. Long story short, we make sure everyone who stays with us - guest, volunteer or staff - has a blast, whatever it is they want to do. We'll help keep you safe, comfy and happy :)

RMB was my home away from home. The staff is nothing short of amazing, friendly and professional - making sure we as volunteers felt comfortable and had respected work-hours while also getting the tasks done properly. The Royal Mile is right outside the front door so the hostel acts as a cozy and quiet hideout from this central street otherwise busy with tourists and bagpipes. Getting to experience Edinburgh's beauty in the welcoming arms of RMB while sipping the free hot chocolate provided in the kitchen really made my trip and I already miss the entire and wonderful team greatly!

I really enjoyed my month at RMB. The management - Jack, Billie, and previously Kat - are very kind and helpful. The 14 hours of work per week is very fair and leaves loads of time to explore Edinburgh. The hostel is in the best location - right on the Royal Mile. It's small and cosy, which makes it feel like home! My experience was made so special by the other volunteers, who were all so lovely and welcoming. I’ll miss you all! I can’t recommend RMB enough.

The last 5 weeks have been nothing short of amazing. RMB has truly been my home away from home. It’s small and cozy, the people are inclusive, and the workload is distributed fairly. To go from not intending to travel further north at all during this trip to be given the chance to live on the Royal Mile and have time off to see the rest of Scotland was inconceivable to me just over a month ago. But I’m so glad I decided to apply for this position. I’m so fortunate to have had this as my first volunteering experience and I’m going to miss the whanau and environment of RMB. Ngā mihi nui.

RMB will forever feel like home for me. All of the people I met, the memories I made. Work is easy and you have lot of time to explore Scotland. Loved it so much!

My time at RMB was one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first time volunteering in a hostel, and now my standards are really high! ;) The hostel is very cozy, and everyone there is so welcoming. Jack and Kat/Billie are amazing managers, they respect your working hours and genuinely want you to have the best experience. It felt like a home away from home. With only 14 hours of work per week, there’s plenty of time to explore the city. The other volunteers are super friendly and open minded, you’ll fit in right away. I’m so sad to leave. I highly recommend RMB.
Thanks for everything
