Satori

Satori is a magical place surrounded by nature, where you'll have the opportunity to get a sense of what it's like to be on a retreat, whilst helping as a volunteer - it's likely that you'll spend a considerable amount of time on your own, on the land - some people find being here challenging, emotionally and physically. It's great when the sun shines and may be more difficult when it's cold and raining.
That said, we've had some amazing feedback of how life changing being here has been...having space away from all the busyness of the outside world and the opportunity to sleep well and rest outside of your helping hours.
Tasks include elements like: wood chopping; clearing weeds/vegetation; building steps; cladding; log stacking; building structures; painting; pruning etc....tasks are changeable and variable - a certain level of fitness is needed as the land is on the side of a hill, some tasks are physically demanding and we might need to work in the rain.
Life is very simple here...the nearest shop is 1.9miles away and we have bikes you can borrow to explore the local area.
The two basic accommodations that we currently have, neither have water/taps/washing up facilities (both have cooking facilities) - the communal washing up sink is a 2-minute walk across the meadow; the compost toilet is a 4-minute walk from any accommodation. Both are heated by woodburners. Have a look on our website/accommodation page to get a clearer understanding on what we offer.

I hope you'll feel you are treated well during a stay with us. Our returning volunteers seem to condone this. I'm quite easy going, and I expect a high standard of enthusiasm, hard-work, honesty and commitment in return, and will support you as best as I can. Any laundry I will do for you at home - or you can bring it home and use our washing machine. It's just me, my fella and adhoc volunteers. We have a twice monthly volunteer for wellbeing day where local people might join us. We like to share some meals together and, you'll need to be ok cooking for yourself as well. The more you put in, the more I give back. I aspire towards a fair exchange and am keen to share my expanding skills and knowledge when I can.

I have been fortunate to have had many great Worldpacker experiences, but I've never learned as much as I have from Emma. She taught me about edible plants and how to make teas from them, as well as tons about the wildlife on the property. We discussed wellbeing and sustainability--a really wide gamut of subjects. It was a privilege to live on such a spectacular tract of land, 22 beautiful acres of meadows and woods, with roe deer as my neighbors.

Emma and Rob are nice people and got to know Andrew (the other volunteer) who is also a very hardworking and nice man. Overall you will be doing hard physical work so I would not recommend if you are not really fit and strong since it can be really hard at times. You have to note that it is a very off grid place and basic needs are going to be a challenge if you are not used to the lifestyle (Showering, toilet, eating). This was my first expierence as a volunteer and maybe would not recommend for a first time. Other than that I think Emma is a very hardworking woman and I wish her the best.

Overall was an amazing time, not just Satori as a place but the people I’m the local community was top notch. Emma and Rob was amazing, caring and so supportive. The other volunteers and the people I got to meet was once in a lifetime opportunity, will never forget 😊 work was easy, Emma is super flexible and it was just an enjoyment overall. Emma does everything to try to include you, so you never feel like you missed out on something. Local experience, walks, pubs and just your overall health. She took care of everything. Would totally recommend, for sure I’m coming back to visit 🤝

Staying in Satori was more than a volunteer. I connected with the place, the nature and new people. I learned so much with Emma and Rob! They are lovely, kind and friendly, always trying to make me feel at home. And, of course, it happened, now I'm missing they all (including Bobo, the lovely cat).
The project is a big opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and with the nature. It's a peaceful place with gorgeous views. It's nice to wake up and see all those green views.
Thank you, Emma, for everything you taught me, I will keep it with me in all my journey.
Hope to see you again someday.

Satori is AMAZING! Such an incredible experience was made possible through the fantastic host Emma. She deeply cares about the mission of Satori and has a genuine passion for the land and nature. I learned so much about native species and foraging. She is so welcoming and wants everyone to get the most out of their volunteer experience. Definitely consider volunteering at Satori!
