Shady Spruce Hostel

Shady Spruce is located in the heart of an eclectic and dynamic western U.S., specifically downtown Missoula, Montana, . Missoula sits near the crown of the North American continent, surrounded by wilderness, native people, clean free flowing rivers, hot springs, and amazing wild animals. Our cozy hostel serves as a clean, warm, and safe resting place where travelers can converge, energize and network.

Greetings! I'm Chris, owner of Shady Spruce hostel. I love to travel, meet new people and embrace all it means to be a positive, tolerant and productive global citizen. I've travelled the world, served extended U.S. Peace Corps assignments, taught at the university level and hold a Master's of Science degree in renewable energy engineering. I work along side an Assistant Manager who also prioritizes guiding Worldpackers through the most unique travel/work experience possible. We have the utmost respect for our volunteers and consider them members of the Shady Spruce family. I'm happiest when hanging out with those who enjoy exploring the world, hiking wilderness, cycling lonely roads, fishing and creating art. I strive to be a person who celebrates diversity, encourages multicultural learning experiences and embraces individuality & personal growth.

This was my first volunteer experience with Basic English here in the USA and I am very happy to have had this opportunity. The hostel is amazing, I had a private environment to sleep and leave my things. The place is safe and has many attractions. I feel that I improved my English a little, I had contact with people from many parts of the world. Chris is a very patient and friendly human being. I certainly recommend this volunteering, especially for those who are traveling alone for the first time. Shady Spruce Hostel is in my heart.

Chris was courteous and professional. This was the first place I came to - be collected from the airport. And the next day, he went over all the chores in the hostel with me. He always asked if everything was okay. His place is magical and fascinating, with a beautiful history highly recommended.

We are more than happy that my boyfriend and I worked here for 1 month. It was a wonderful time and Chris is a great host. We really enjoyed the work. You get direct responsibility, which meant a lot to us. In addition, the city is very beautiful and there is always something to experience. Missoula is really very beautiful!!! We are more than grateful for this experience and can only recommend it to everyone. The tasks are: cleaning, vacuum cleaners, making beds, emptying the dishwasher and operating the washing machine. Thank you Chris for this experience in our lives. ❤️

My time at Shady Spruce was better than I could have ever planned! This is truly the best gig ever if you want plenty of free time to explore beautiful Missoula & nature. The location couldn’t be more perfect, the hours are super reasonable, the work is straight forward and at your own pace, the town is amazing, the Rivers, I could go on and on but I think anyone who is independent and adventurous will thrive in this position & I’m jealous, I miss it already! Can’t forget Chris- he’s an awesome host and wonderful human. You’ll be in great hands!! THANKS SHADY AND CHRIS <3
