Skyros Island Horse Trust Friends of the Skyrian Horse

Hi Potential volunteers and welcome. Our nonprofit project will allow you to truly contribute and make a difference to a genuine conservation and welfare organization and help a rare and critically endangered breed of pony the skyrian pony who are fabulous characters while offering you a safe haven to explore the island and get to know a little about real rural Greek island life. Skyros is an amazing island, beautiful and unspoiled by tourists a great place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. We are close to the sea, beach and an ancient archeological site, and a great taverna. Please do note we do ask for a volunteering commitment of at 4 weeks and preferably to have real experience with ponies , horses or farm life .

Our project was set up by Stathis a skyrian artist/ potter and Amanda a community artist and movement therapist. Amanda is experienced with ethical and natural horsemanship and has many skills to offer in this area. We have been running the project since 2006 and have hosted over 300 volunteers, from different organizations and the horse world, many of who come back year after year and have become like a family. We usually have 2 to 3 volunteers at the farm, without volunteer support it is challenging to care for our herd of 34 endangered breed skyrian ponies. We expect volunteers to muck in, be mature and self-motivated, be happy to help physically for 4 to 5 hours a day, and in exchange, we offer a safe haven for both animals and people to grow and develop and have space to reconnect to nature and find the time to find what inspires and drives them, whilst also learning about the commitment it takes to care for animals well. Please do note we do ask for a volunteering commitment of at 4 weeks and preferably to have real experience with ponies or horses or farm tasks.

i had a wonderful time at Amanda‘s! the ponies (and the other animals) are more than well cared for, you can really see that Amanda and Stathis are real animal lovers & have dedicated their life to this project, very inspiring! not only their animals are treated with respect, but it’s the same with us volunteers, I felt very welcome. the work is fair and easy but still important (e.g. mucking out, filling up waters).
unfortunately, i injured my ankle and decided to leave to get treatment (I’ve had problems with this before, so i had to be careful). Amanda was very understanding & supportive:)

My time at Amanda‘s and Stathis‘ is incredible! I extended my stay and I’m still here, enjoying great company and the island‘s and farm‘s calmness.
Amanda and Stathis are genuinely nice people, treat their volunteers with a lot of respect and don’t let you feel exploited at any time.
The work is meaningful and quite easy. It’s majorly about mucking out the fields, but also common farm jobs (e.g. weeding, pruning).
Volunteers share a room, which is basic, but has everything one needs and it’s really enjoyable when you get along with your roommates :).
Good+enough food is provided! Go there!

This is a place where animals have the best care and where their needs come first.
Amanda ( the owner with her partner Stathis ) will tell you exactly and precisely how you can work. You can always ask questions to other.s volunteers. The farmers are very dedicated to their farm and work hard at it. You'll feel very fast if you can be part of it.
The meals are very tasty.
The volunteer's room is rustic and cosy.
The village is 15min in car, you can get a cab or hitchhike, the greek people are very welcoming and kind. There is a beautiful beach, a nice taverna,...a wide view on the sky..

I enjoyed the experience. Its the kind of place were you go to get away from everything. The life in the farm is not easy, but is real and the project is honest. The horses are really good cared.

I had a great time at the farm! I can definitely recommend it, if you're looking for some time off loud city noises and stress. The farm is very rural and simple, with no wifi, just other farmers around you and you're gonna share a room with the other volunteers.
Stahtis and Amanda (the hosts) are very nice people, they don't have that much time for you since they have a lot to do, but that doesn't matter because there are always other volunteers to talk to.
If you have any questions about the daily routines or anything else, just write me:)

Laura was wonderful always eager to help reliable and with a lovely happy character it was lovely to host her. Even though she had limited experience of horses she tried hard and helped in so many ways and did a great job. She is mature hardworking and very Safire to be around. It was unfortunate that when she was here Stathis and I were really busy and so had limited time to socialize. Thank you Laura for everything and we wish you well.
