Summer Leaves

In winter, Hakuba is a busy village welcoming skiers all over the world with 11 ski resorts and over 200 trials. In summer, Hakuba also offers adventures. There are numerous hiking routes (from easy to hard) for you to explore the Japanese alpine mountains, and the nearby lakes (Lake Aoki and Lake Kisaki) are oppcupied by Kayak and swimming clubs. The closest creek named Hime River is good for rafting, and you can choose from all different camp sites to set up a tent and smell the flowers. Hotel Summer Leaves is a 2-floor building with 14 rooms and a 20-seat restaurant. This small family hostel is 2 km away from the nearest ski resort called "Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort". A small natural park for wild flowers, mainly the "Alpine Flower (Mizubashou)", is literally 20 meters away from its back door. The host will offer the good food, dormitory and ski ticket in winter. If you are a big fan of Outdoor sports or ski, Summer Leaves is a best choice.

The operator of Hotel Summer Leaves is a guy from China who speaks English and Chinese, and is learning Japanese right now. He is good at cooking, loves travelling, and he wishes to offer a small, cozy and fun space for people from different places to meet and know each other and spend a pleasant time together.

I really enjoyed my time at Summer Leaves and thought the work exchange was very worthwhile. The host family were a pleasure to work with and talk to. For the staff accomodation there were two rooms with 4 bunk beds in each, no complaints! Duties included cleaning rooms, toilets, and common areas, helping with the breakfast on busy days. Mickeys cooking is great and we were well catered for everyday. We were often able to go skiing which was our reason for coming. Would come back if I could!

This host goes above and beyond.
I think most people on Worldpackers will leave 5 star reviews because most experiences here are wonderful. I have done a few work exchanges and I can honestly say volunteers get a fantastic experience here.
The work is the most I have seen so far, but you feel a sense of responsibility for the space so it is well worth it.
We got private accomadation, freshly cooked meals three times a day, a small truck we could drive freely, got to hang out with a cute 6 year old girl, got driven to onsen frequently, free ski passes, free ski equipment.
Will be back!

Summer Leaves is a warm and welcoming place for everyone! Mickey and Mary are social and open people interested in getting to know you and making sure you have a great time in Hakuba! Besides work, they made sure we got to experience local activities, visit nice places and that we had enough time on the slopes!

The summer leaves is an amazing place to volunteer! The location is great, the guests are always happy, and the staff and hosts have become my family! Respect always comes first and there I learned a lot about others and even more about myself. A great experience for those who want to practice other languages, discover many wonderful places, and snowboard a lot.
impeccable nature, in addition to having a lot of fun! All day and all night :D
