The Bent Branch Permaculture Garden

Find The Bent Branch on Instagram The project is a working example of a self sufficient off the grid homestead, with a free outlook on life; Your host, Philippos, (Evan) (originally from South Africa) has an interest in permaculture and sustainable living. The island is a wild, remote and magical place. The homestead is gay - lgbt+ friendly. Being here on Samothraki and experiencing life in the village opens up a whole different dimension to the usual tourist experience of this island. The homestead is quiet: only instrumental music and singing; no music on loudspeakers, although you are free to use headphones. You are encouraged to experience the quiet and natural sounds of the island.

There are no staff. We work together collaboratively here, in the garden, building things like water channels and raised beds for planting, foraging and looking after the things needed in living a self sufficient life. You can expect to be part of a team, and are encouraged to feel like this is your home while you are here. There are two bicycles that volunteers can use to get around on the island.

The Bent Branch was an amazing place to stay and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience sustainable living and have a good time as well. Samothraki is beautiful and well worth a short ferry! Nakia (the cat) will also always keep you entertained. Great people and a great place

I was very well received by Philippos, who at every moment made me feel at home, and when he introduced me to the neighbours I felt living more connected in the experience. I helped with daily chores like taking care of the animals, lighting the fire, helping in the kitchen. I tried foods I didn't even know existed and Philippos has very interesting food preservation strategies. I also helped in some improvements around the farm, which was very good for me this contact with nature. I met an Australian and a Danish, that helped me in my English. The island is beautiful!

Evon put a lot of effort into showing me around the island, biking me around long distances and showing me all that Samothraki's nature had to offer. Although there were no other volunteers at the time I was there, I was never bored because Evon would take me to introduce me to the neighbours, who we visited often.

If you've always lived around a busy city like myself, this place will probably shock you by its simplicity, peaceful and yet quite wild atmosphere.
The concept of "connecting with nature" is tangible here. No unnecessary stress, living and existing as a mere human being with force and humility.
The place is also a good reflection of its owner. A man which his knowledge and ingéniosity is only equaled by his kindness and humanity. A gentle force with strong values such as self and mutual respect who enjoys teaching new things and help to improve. Fantastic experience.
