We are located in Hawaii's cool rain forest in Volcano Village, within five minutes of Hawaii's Volcano National Park. The area is known for its rich culture and entrancing natural beauty which has inspired the local artists and craftspeople that live here. We are a small Eco friendly Inn, surrounded by beautiful ferns, trees, and ambient sounds of our native rain forest. If this sounds appealing to you we are looking for a work exchange person for this position. We appreciate an eye for detail and positive attitude. This position requires 25 hours a week in trade for a shared room with a bathroom and a separate cooking area. We are walking distance from a few general stores and restaurants. We are along a bus route if you need transportation to and from town (Hilo) which is 30 minutes North East from our location. Hilo features waterfalls as well as historic bay front shopping and restaurants. The same bus offers rides to Kona , if you're interested in exploring the beaches on your days off. https://www.instagram.com/hotelvolcanoinn/
Here in Hawaii our culture is very important to us , we believe to treat everyone with Aloha and respect. This is carried out with our staff as well . The volunteers can expect to be met with the very same.
Super remote location, you have to take the bus to get anywhere and you'll get done with work too late to have time to go into Hilo. The positive about the location is the National Park, but we had explored all of it in the first two weeks so, after that time period, continuing to mindlessly clean rooms didn't really seem worth it. Alex and Savannah are both very communicative and helpful, but other full-timers seemed far less interested in collaboration/the well-being of the packers. I would only recommend for the park, but honestly just do another workX and visit Volcano in your free time.

Definitely need rental car - location is 40 min from Hilo and second property can't be cleaned without car ride across highway - buses are sparse and conflict with work schedule. While work was straight-forward, management seemed spread thin and fast housekeeping before check-in was pushed on work exchangers. Location is beautiful and close to national park, however, the contract we signed before working wasn't honored in full - it was disappointing to lose our $200 security deposit after following our contract. When asked for a reason, management said the deposit was not for key and cleaning.

Aloha Nicholas, Thank you for leaving a review. The reason that you did not get the deposit back was because you and your friend left on a short notice 2 weeks into your stay; and did not fulfill the required 4 week minimum stay; which you clearly agreed to when applying to come and stay with us.
This was my very first work exchange experience and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better one! They made me feel welcomed right from the start. The work was, in my opinion super easy! However, I have to say after observing others, its not for everyone. If you think you're coming here for a chill vacation where you barely put in any effort, this isn't the place for you. This is a beautiful Bed and Breakfast and caring about the guests experience needs to be a priority while on duty. The managers are respectful and very easy to get along with. I would highly recommend this work exchange!!

A friend and I worked at the Volcano Inn for a little over a month and loved it! The property is absolutely beautiful and just down the road is the Volcano National Park as well as a few restaurants, art galleries and general stores. We had our own room and bathroom and access to our own kitchen. We worked breakfast and housekeeping shifts and the host was always great about working with our schedules. There is a bus that you can take all around the island, but I would definitely recommend renting a car if you can. The staff here are great and overall we had a really enjoyable experience!
