Wild Ginger Hotel

Travelers will greatly benefit from volunteering with us. We are very close to everything in Hilo and have so much to offer. Our staff also have access to a shared vehicle, and we absolutely love sharing tips about traveling around Hawaii.

We have created a wonderfully comfortable and fun environment. Our team members can expect to be treated with kindness and respect at all times. We work collectively as a team to create a unique and beautiful Hawaii experience. There is a very relaxed and light work environment, and we strive to ensure our volunteers greatly benefit from their time here.

This experience is truly one of a kind! It a really abundant and unique opportunity to see the island and experience work trade! For me it was a wonderful stepping stone to establish myself in Hawaii. If you are outgoing, sociable, ready to work hard and wanting to experience Hawaii, this could be a wonderful opportunity for you. I will say that many factors about the atmosphere change frequently be ready to adjust! I would highly recommend reaching out to the girls currently there to get an understanding of the conditions before your arrival so you can be prepared. I had the best time!!:)

My stay at the Ginger was really good. Not only the girls were very nice but there was an amazing communication with Jason. He’s flexible when you need it and the work itself isn’t that hard. Lots of food provided (so you’re never hungry :D) and lots of things we could do, the hotel is 10 min walk from downtown so everything is accessible. It can get messy but as long as everyone’s doing their part it should stay pretty clean. It’s a great experience to explore the island, meet locals, learn about the hawaiian culture… Big island has so much to offer, anyone should give it a try.

My stay at the Wild Ginger was amazing! The other girls there were amazing and its so cool to be connected to people all over the world now.
The host provided a fully stocked fridge and a car for the volunteers to use, which was so practical! This way we were able to explore different beaches with the car.
The work was also mostly fun, especially working at the reception, but also demanding.
The volunteers are the only people working in the hotel, but there is a really nice and helpful maintanance guy (Hi Cody!) and if you have any questions or needs you can always text the host.

My experience at the Wild Ginger was one of a kind, I must say! Leadership is remote, so a good team and space truly depends on the volunteers. There are some hygiene issues and it can get chaotic at times, but it is never going to be perfect when you live and work with the same people. It is a hostel after all. Going into this Worldpackers: remember to be open minded, your own autonomy, and that change starts with you! Also, you’ll be living in Hawaii, if there are bad vibes, go explore and then come back to the issue. Let nature and new experiences heal you! Thank you Jason and Lee! :)

Because of Lee and Jason’s generosity, I experienced the beauty of Hawaii and formed friendships that will last forever. For this, I am grateful and do not regret my trip. I cannot in good conscience allow another girl to end up in the hotel without a few words: the owners are not on the premises; the atmosphere wholly depends on group dynamics. There are bacterial and viral infections that spread rapidly if one girl is unhygienic. But I like to believe the German Cockroaches, rats, and termites in the walls are all best friends. If you go on this trip, don’t forget your autonomy/common sense.
