I applied for the opportunity one month before my flight, I called Alessandro, he was so nice with me and he told that I could do whatever I wanted, like Marketing or Reception.
When I arrived there, I didn't know where was my bed and I just had to wait for Alessandro, then when he arrived he just said "Hello", and he brought us to another part of the Hostel, asking us to take heavy pieces of construction to another part of the room, when I asked if we could talk, he just said “It’s not time to talk, it’s time to work”.
After less than 24 hour I left the Hostel.
The first impression was good, as a hostel, they are quite good. However, not good things had happened with me and the others volunteers that have turned to a unconfortable stay. They did't explained well what I supposed to do and then expected that I would do a professional work. I was unconfortable to handle with their cash and they asked me to leave (in my third day). There are two responsables, one of them seems to be a good guy, but the other one was really rude.
Alessandro runs a really unique and familial hostel, and was extremely warm and welcoming from the minute I walked in. I was able to socialize with and get to know the guests on a personal level, while having some time to myself to explore the city. The work itself changes every day, and it is sometimes unclear what the expectations are. Work ranged from cleaning to social media promotions to reception, depending on what was needed that day. Overall, a positive experience and it was nice to become part of the family!
