Help maintain and renovate our guest cottages

The Exchange

Our 60 acre eco lodge, heritage site and farm has 5 guest cottages and a 180 year old plantation house which need to be repaired and upgraded on a regular basis. We typically do this in the off season from April to December. We are looking for someone primarily skilled in building and any kind of wood work - carpentry, framing, furniture making etc. Experience in electrical, plumbing, small engine and power tool repair is also a plus.

Program Details

Our volunteers have their own private cabin, and also receive free breakfast and dinner. Our family consists of my mother (73) and myself (41), and my 5 year old nephew who lives with us part time. Balenbouche Estate is a historic sugar plantation which over the last 35 years we have converted into a retreat center, heritage park, eco lodge and restaurant. We are constantly building or fixing something. There are 2 beaches on property and many attractions within a 10 - 30 minute drive. Our property and the South of St. Lucia is a beautiful place to visit and explore.

Activities & Shift

You can determine your own hours and days and most times will have at least one general laborer to help you. We will go through all the buildings and make a priority list of what needs to be repaired, and maybe also come up with one or two bigger projects, such as adding a kitchen to one of the guest cabins, or redoing part of a roof etc. My mother has a background in carpentry, architecture and design, and we both have experience with building. We love coming up with creative and inexpensive solutions using local materials.

Must be patient and flexible and able to improvise using limited tools and materials.
