Program Details

We need capable and handy people to help us with maintenance and building projects at our beach resort. The resort is one of many fundraising businesses run by our charity - Orangutan Project - which is an animal welfare and conservation charity on Borneo. **100% of our proceeds from the resort (and our other businesses in Kuching) go towards conservation and welfare!** Because of this we would like to work on making our resort more eco-friendly.
We want to change our chlorine pool to salt, install eco-toilets, water recycling systems and start a garden and composting pile on the grounds. Depending on your skill set, you could help us in a number of ways!

For more information about our charity and what we do, check out our profile!

Activities & Shift

Generally, our volunteers work during the week to get things done on the grounds because the weekends are our busiest times. You will be working and living at the resort, so you will need to manage your personal time and work time effectively.

Most volunteers work Mon-Fri 9-12 and 3-6 because the afternoons are hot in the tropics, but the shifts are flexible depending on your work style.

We have lots of ideas on how to make our resort more eco-friendly and are looking for people who are generally competent builders. Some bigger projects we are interested include using shipping containers to add additional rooms to the resort.

You will be taking control of the projects and a lot of the maintenance, so please only apply if you have relevant experience.

Rules

The accommodation is in the staff quarters at the resort. The quarters are very basic but comfortable, and have the beach right outside your door. We are looking to improve the volunteer quarters as well, so this might be a fun side project you can do! You will have a private room and access to a shared bathroom with cold showers and western toilets. You can use the amenities at the hotel like the pool and beach anytime you would like.

A personal living stipend is provided every week, and we provide discounts at our bars and hotel in Kuching. In exchange for all we provide, we are looking for people willing to work and help make a difference, not a free vacation :)
