The Exchange

The Blue Canary is a small human size human sized hostel in the downtown of Strasbourg. We have a team of 4 to 6 volunteers for around 15 guests.


32 hours of help per week

Night Shift: Help with night shift tasks and create a relaxing environment for guests.

Kitchen Hand: Help prepare, finish and serve meals.

Reception: Help with check-ins, check-outs and guest assistance.

Bartending: Make and serve drinks and help maintain the beverages inventory.

Program Details

Our long term volunteers are mainly hosted in a separated flat, at a couple of minutes walking distance of the house, to feel like at home. We organize shift to have permanently somebody at the hostel. The volunteers present for shortes periods are in a team dorm of the hostel.

Activities & Shift

Night shift 4 nights per Week from 23h15 to 7h15, with the following tasks :
- late&early checkins / early check-outs
- closing and ordering the reception/lounge at midnight
- updating checkin/checkout panels
- preparing the breakfast in the lounge at 6h30
- making sure the hostel is calm within the night
- giving advices place to go out to the guest
- answering phone calls

2 volunteers share this position within the Week (it's flexible, we can arrange differently):
Sunday : Volunteer 1
Monday : volunteer 1
Tuesday : Volunteer 1
Wednesday : Volunteer 2
Thursday : Volunteer 2
Friday : Volunter 2
Saturday : Both, then 1 stays at reception, and the other one goes with the "going-out" team enjoying nightlife with guests, with responsability to bring back safely to the hostel the guests when they want go back sleeping


For this position, the nights of work a folding bed is available at the reception to sleep, knowing that he can be waked up by a guest for a check in, or a question. The others nights, the volunteer is hosted in the volunteers flat, or in the volunteer dorm.
