The Exchange

We have 6 different projects focused in community development located in Kibele, Tunguu and Pemba, Zanzibar that you can join any time: CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM, SUSTAINABLE LIVING, SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE RURAL COMMUNITIES, DEVELOPING CHILD CREATIVITY, COASTAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION and DEVELOPING COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP.


Title

25 hours of help per week

Teaching Sports: Teach or help guests or local communities practice a new sport.

Teaching Languages: Teach a language to guests or local communities.


What you get

2 days off per week

Private Room: You will have a bed in a private room. In other words, a room just for you.

Breakfast: You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

Lunch: You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.


Requirements

Intermediate English or Beginner Swahili

Between 18 and 80 years old

Accepts solo applications and also couples and pairs


What's not included

Flights, Travel Insurance, Internal Transportation and Visa


Program Details

It is a unique cross cultural experiences program that connects people from around the world with local communities in Zanzibar. The program offers a powerful vision built on our belief that volunteers, young people and local hosting communities has a vital role to play in development and in building a more just and sustainable world community. PDS program is a tool to demonstrate that, living and working together is not only possible but also rewarding.
In this program we see the possibility of program participants and the hosting communities exchange experience, and thus gain in-deep knowledge of other Social, Cultural and economic realities of the world.


Activities & Shift

work with Children (At the Nursery Schools at Pemba Island), participate in cultural exchange through creative arts activities, Learning and practicing African traditional dances, songs, cooking, drumming and learning Swahili language. Flexibility is required for extra activities related to the theme. Establishment/Management of tree nursery; Maintenance of the organic vegetable garden; Composting activities for organic garden and education;; Organiing educational activities on sustainable living & healthy eating, Fish farming education and maintenance, environmental skills and so on.
Games: games that will stimulate learning, organizing. Local games will be introduced as well foreign ones from the volunteers. Please bring new games to share with Kids; Physical activities: Action jumping, etc. Gardening: vegetable planting, composting, garden tour etc.; Nature activities.


Rules

Finances: Participants are expected to pay a non-refundable participation fee of 7$ per day, that cover the cost of airport pickups on arrival, orientation on arrival, food and accommodation during the project and general running cost of the program.

Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated with the host families at the Tunguu Community or Tumbe village at Pemba. Some Participants might be accommodated in the common house for PDS Volunteers in Tunguu Zanzibar or Tumbe village in Pemba Island depending on which area you want to volunteer. Clean water and electricity will be available.

Food: Food will be provided in a house for PDS volunteers or to the local house depending where volunteer stay. Participants with special dietary requirements should inform us well in advance. Participants are expected to help in preparation of the some meals as a part of exchange.
