The Exchange

Learn about Indian culture in this cultural exchange at the Kumaon Foothills of Himalayas. We have a small cafe and our goal is to provide a friendly and open-minded environment where local students, travelers, and residents can practice conversation and cultural exchange in languages like English, French, Italian, German, etc. and make new friends. We do host different events, so you always have the option to be part of them.


Title

25 hours of help per week

Kitchen Hand: Help prepare, finish and serve meals.

Party Promoter: Help organise and promote parties and social activities.

Reception: Help with check-ins, check-outs and guest assistance.

Bartending: Make and serve drinks and help maintain the beverages inventory.


What you get

2 days off per week

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Breakfast: You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

Lunch: You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.

Discounts on Drinks: Get discounts for drinks and beverages from our bar.

Pick Up: We will pick you up when you arrive, and take you to our property.

Use our equipped kitchen: Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.


Requirements

Intermediate English or Fluent English

Between 18 and 35 years old

Only hosts solo volunteers (doesn’t accept couples or pairs)

Program Details

Help entails greeting and engaging in conversation with guests. Generally being the friendly face and also help our local staff during the day with simple English conversation. Other tasks include helping our staff to understand general etiquette and how to manage various tasks in which you are an expert.

You will share your culture and language and will also have the opportunity to learn about Indian culture through conversations with our team members, guests, and villagers. You will learn about Kumaoni culture, traditions and Indian festivals that happen all year round.

You are free to help us organize cooking, baking, painting, art, music and language workshops for foodies, guests, local kids & teens as well. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to interact and learn from our guests.



Activities & Shift

Shifts:
You will help for 5 days in a week and for up to 5 hours each day. Your shifts will be rotational from week to week or day to day depending on the help needed. Additionally, you will also have 2 weekdays off (2 days between Monday and Friday) per week so that you can explore our area.

The cafe is open from
• Monday to Friday 7:00 AM -11 PM
• Saturday and Sunday 11 AM - 12:00 AM

Your daily activities:
Greeting and engaging in conversation with guests. Helping our staff to understand general etiquette and how to manage various tasks in which you are an expert. Organize workshops, events, and activities.

Landscaping, organic gardening, and other activities are there for you if you wish to learn from our team members.

As part of the cultural exchange, you can also have access to day trips to the spice market, local villages, and temples in our area on request.


Rules

What we expect from you when visiting our cafe:

• Be easy to get along with others and help our team members.
• Ready to help on the various rotational tasks.

::: We are not looking for lazy members as we have a very active but easy and smooth working style :::
• Aged 18-35 (Women) 18-30 (Men).
• Fluent English conversation ability (do not have to be a native English speaker). You need to be able to speak English confidently.
• Minimum Stay: 2 weeks (15 days).
• Professional conduct, sociable and friendly.
• Excellent personal hygiene is a must as you will be talking with people every day and living with others.
• You should dress modestly as we are located in a village.
• We expect you to respect the local cultural and social way of living.
• No drugs or any other illegal activity. This is strictly prohibited.
• Please inform us in advance of any historical illness or allergy.
