The Exchange

I operate a "glamping" campground 10 miles North of Hilo, Hawaii (on the Big Island) near the tiny farming town of Honomu and the legendary Akaka Falls on the beautiful Hamakua Coast. We live off-grid which mean we get most of our power from solar panels so we are providing an eco-friendly place to say. We need help with tasks such as laundry, housekeeping and light maintenance.

What you offer

11 hours of help per week

Cleaning: Help clean the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and common areas.

Housekeeping: Help with changing the bed linens and general housekeeping.

What you get

2 days off per week

Team Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other people.

Free Laundry: You can use our laundry room freely.

Free Hiking Tours: We’ll take you on excursions and hikes around town. For free!

Bikes at your disposal: You can use our bikes any time you want.

Use our equipped kitchen: Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.

Program Details

You will be staying in an outdoor 4-person dormitory. The space is co-ed so both men and women will be staying in there. You will have your own single bunk bed (and it is a real bed).

Your stay includes: linens, a cooler with ice, deep freezer access, unlimited wifi, a property t-shirt (based on availability), 1 trip to Hilo per week to allow you to restock your groceries, and a lock box to secure your belongings.

Your stay does not include: transportation, groceries or meals, or housekeeping (must clean up after yourself).

Activities & Shift

The daily tasks at my place have been broken up into four categories. In the most basic terms they consist of 1) housekeeping/cleaning indoor rooms, 2) housekeeping/cleaning outdoor glamping tents, 3) laundry, or 4) maintenance. You will only be assigned one category for a one week term and then the responsibilities will be rotated based on the number of WorkAway participants that are currently staying here. During that week, you must take ownership of that category and you will be provided with a detailed checklist to help you succeed in your assigned role.

You should expect an average of 1-2 hours of time devoted to your tasks daily (slightly more at first as you get familiar with the place and the tasks). You will have 1-3 days off per week for exploring the island based around the schedule of guest check-ins and check-outs.


No Pets. You must clean up after yourself. Only one person to each bed in the dorm at all times. You must always maintain a sense of professionalism and cordiality in the presence of any guests. You will not be able to bring overnight visitors. You must smoke only in designated areas and properly dispose of your waste. No hard drugs or excessive alcohol consumption. You may need to yield use of amenities to guests in some cases.
