The Experience

Hi there - my name is Roy and I’ve enjoyed hosting volunteers for nearly ten years now, it’s been great: they have been part of my family. You can get to know my beautiful Highland Cattle, help with fencing and maintenance, look after my guests and their accommodation. You will learn outdoor skills such as fencing, machinery operating, cattle management and also tool-use, construction skills and maintenance, and hospitality skills for visitors.

During my stay at the lodge I learned a lot about Highland Cattle. From feeding, washing, combing or sometimes just petting them, Roy allowed us to take part in every activity with the animals which was absolutely awesome. The Airbnb we took care of required a lot of work but by structuring our tasks, everything worked out and I had a lot of fun in such a beautiful accomodation. Roy is not only an amazing host but also a great person! He always made sure everyone felt comfortable and that made me feel very safe at the lodge :)

Things didn't work. Everyone's choice must be respected without being coerced or forced to do otherwise. Had to leave dues to these reasons without going into detail.

It was a really nice experience, it seemed to me to live in a parallel reality, stimulating and relaxing at the same time

Key tasks: to feed the highland cows, join morning meeting to discuss key opportunities, clean guests rooms, cook dinners, observe cattle's need and take immediate actions to address them, e.g. checking if new born babies drinking milk from mum. Takeaways: I met new friends and the knowledgeable cow expert host Roy, I learnt a lot about highland cattle and personally accomplished many breakthroughs: I learnt how to drive quad, improved in cooking, overcome fears in interacting with big cattle. Helping to ear tag baby cow, combing cow Alice, hiking peaceful mountains are just unforgettable.
