This was my first experience as a Worldpacker, and it was incredible! The city is astonishing, the hostel is full of life (the vibe is awesome), the SUPERcrew couldn't be better, friendly and ready for whatever you want, like hiking, running, party (they are the best party people). The working part is really more than fair, 3 days off each week. Working in the tents was really nice, with all the alps around, extremely beautiful! Nightshift was just great, you could enjoy your day as much as you want and work at night. I'm really happy to say that the Balmers Hostel will be always in my heart!
The staff is like a big, multilingual family. The only problem was the communication between worldpacker and supervisor. The worldpacker's rooms are less than promised, very dirty, not easily lockable (not at all from inside) and no Wi-Fi reaches it. Our hours are great, but even though I was told I could be off if finished early, they say "there is always something to do", so some of the workers (tents) take advantage of worldpackers and throw work upon us to do less themselves. Schedule changes without notices and favouritism are common. I will apply all I learned at Balmers in my future.
Thank you for your feedback, everyone is issued with a key to lock the apartment, and if it's not clean then it is the responsibility of the volunteers to keep clean. Only volunteers live there- You apply for specific jobs and times and the aim is to help the rest of the team out. If one has finished up something then there is always something else you can do to help. You get out what you put in as in most jobs in the world. If you spend time complaining and always questioning everything and creating bad atmosphere amangst the other staff then it doesn't make it easy to give back.
The slogan of the hostel is "I had great times at Balmers" and that is exactly what it was. If you're looking for a huge experience you'll find being a worldpacker there. Was my first experience and I stayed the maximum period of 3 months and I can say that was the best thing I did. Don't go believing that work is light, it's not. Especially in summer. But every second worth it! You're there to help, not just to have fun and make memories. Do not fall for this mistake! Help! Be a team! Feel the amazing energy of that place, it's awsome. I'm already missing the crew and the place a lot!
