The Experience

We have a little horse farm in the south of Brandenburg and looking for a nature-loving girl/boy to help us with working horses, running the farm and keep an eye on our dogs (big and small ones - they are really lovely!!!) Vegan diet is not possible for us. Please only helper with physical fitness. You live with us, as a part of the family in a quiet rural farmyard together with 4 dogs in the house. Our life is rural simple - but very open.

I stayed on the farm for three weeks and it went by way too quickly. Gerlind is a lovely person with such a kind heart, and you can see she really cares for all her animals so well (horse experience is definitely needed) . The work hours and tasks are very reasonable and easy. Working a couple hours a day and plenty of time to rest, chill out, and explore the nearby towns. I would recommend this experience to animal (especially horses) and nature lovers who want some time to disconnect from city life and see the beautiful German countryside.

I stayed with Gerlind for a total of five weeks and it was a really good experience overall. Daily tasks included mucking out the paddock, moving horses, gardening and any odd chores throughout the day. Later on in my stay two foals were born and so daily tasks also included cleaning their stables. Gerlind is a wonderful and experienced host who is incredibly passionate about horses, dogs and the environment. She gives clear, direct instructions for daily tasks and enjoys telling stories about her life, her animals and the forest(s) that she has lived in.

The animals are what make the experience worthwhile. But the host was problematic. I only stayed for a week out of the whole period planned. On the first day she said she was afraid I wouldn't adapt, and on the second day she told me that my energy wasn't right, without even giving me the chance to adapt to the place. She doesn't like to be contradicted or to have her opinions disagreed with. She considers the volunteers to be servants. No WIFI and no signal. If you don't leave for another city, you have to work without a day off. No sources of protein at lunch and breakfast is just cereal.

I had a really interesting experience. The place and animals are beautiful and if you are looking for a place to be far far away from society, this is where. I learnt a lot about horses and dogs! Also about this peoples lifestyle and myself. The work hours are respected. You need to know about horses. But, I wouldn't recommend this place if you aren't from or used to the countryside. Because you will be expected to act and know things from there and if you don't, they will ask you to leave. Also they aren't easy people to be around, you will need to be incredibly flexible and open to fit in.

Gerlind, the host, lives in this cozy house in the middle of the forest, with her dogs and the ponies; she's kind and has a lot of experience in horses' and dogs' breeding, she always tells really good stories. However I left earlier because it wasn't the right place for me since I'm not used at all to live so far away from the city and from people, there wasn't the opportunity to meet new people (there weren't other volunteers during my stay). I would recommend this experience if you're looking for a place to be in complete touch with nature and if you don't need to be around people.
