The Experience

1) We only accept people as rooms open up and only have one group space (camper) and 2 bedrooms. Currently we one room available. 2) We expect that workaway volunteers will work 5 hours a day with 2 days off preferably not the weekend. Depending on the task the schedule could be anytime between 8am to 8pm to get the work done. The first week is learning feeding and basic animal care, but we also need office work, grant writers, and other options.

Staying with Alex and Keith has been a delight. The work is gratifying in the way that you really feel like you are helping. You are in close contact with the animals with the main work being feeding and mucking, but there is time for grooming and cuddeling too. Alex is very knowledgeable about the animals and you learn a lot about them and their care in general. The house is in a more rural part with clayton about 30 minutes drive away and Raleigh a bit further, so there is a lot of beautiful nature around. It's an experience I sincerely recommend.

This is the perfect volunteering opportunity if you love to be with animals! All of them are super sweet and will come up to you for pets. Alex and Keith own horses, donkeys, pigs, goats, sheep and many more 🥰 My favorite part of the day was sitting on the porch after working and just watching the animals. Sometimes Tot the pig, Alberta the sheep and Lily the goat will keep you company and snuggle beside you! Our volunteering tasks included feeding, mucking, grooming the animals and sometimes walk them too. We also met local volunteers and could go out in the evenings and explore the area!

I had a wonderful time at the shelter ER. The animals are super friendly and fun to work with, and even as a volunteer, I got to have a lot of contact with them. the shelter helps a super wide variety of animals -- horses, mules, hinnies, miniature horses, goats, pigs, chickens, dogs, and even a sheep, to name a few! Alex, the host, is super knowledgeable about each animal and their care, and she is very willing to share what she knows! The private room was nice, and the bed was super comfy! Alex and her husband often cook dinner and they used to own restaurants, so the food is amazing!
