Barbarossa Hostel

Barbarossa Hostel, situated in a 150 year old warehouse building, offers its guests stylish, peaceful and centrally located accommodation in the historic centre of Nijmegen.

Located in a quiet square just off the main shopping street, the hostel makes a perfect base to enjoy the contemporary and youthful atmosphere the city has to offer.

Nijmegen is located close to the German border in the province of Gelderland, and is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back to the Roman Empire. Hosting a large university and several further education colleges, the city is full of students.

Nijmegen has always been known for its active political youth scene, which means you will likely be welcomed by open-minded and friendly individuals.

The city has access to numerous parks, green areas, trendy pubs, cafés with live music, concert halls and nightclubs. Large festivals are often held in Nijmegen, the most famous of which is the ‘Vierdaagse’ (Four Day March). This walking event is held together
with the “Zomerfeesten” (Summer festivities) and attracts around a million visitors of all ages.

Wintertime is typically windy, rainy and grey, with the occasional bit of snow and some beautifully crisp, sunny days. The perfect time to curl up with a book, watch a movie, or play some board games.

We like to think of our small hostel as one big family where everybody has the space to relax and do their own thing, but also participate to make Barbarossa a better place together. Common spaces include a kitchen, dining and living room, an outside roof terrace. We are looking for adventurous, open-minded and energetic volunteers to join our team. If you are looking to stay for the medium to long-term in a place like Nijmegen, volunteering at Barbarossa is an ideal opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, to discover Dutch culture and to have a great time in this historic and vibrant city. We don’t have preference on gender or sexual orientation, everybody is welcome. ☺ Speaking Dutch and/or German is a plus, but not mandatory.

I had a great time in Barbarossa! The bedroom is nice, good showers, the breakfast is very good and abundant, they try really hard to make everyone happy. I worked in the cleaning/housekeeping and reception shifts. Be aware that in here you can party very hard and have loads of fun, but you also have to work hard. The cleaning shift is not always pleasant, but it is worth it considering the environment and the people you get to enjoy here. Definetly in my top 5 volunteer experiences. Erick was a plus - thank you so much for everything bro, you are AWESOME. I am already missing Barbarossa 💙

The hostel facilities are quite simple but you got everything you need and the location is great.
The work is easy and even when the hostel is busy is not hard at all, you may have to make a lot of beds on weekends but that's it.
The amount of work required is exactly what agreed and you will have plenty of free time to do whatever you feel like doing it.
The whole thing with the place is the people, I made really good friends and had an amazing time.
Joep and Erick, thank you so much for looking after us and being such good hosts, you are the best.

Jonty and I had a great time in Nijmegen at Barbarossa. The city is so cute, and it’s easy to get around the Netherlands to explore, especially on your 3 days off! The cleaning and reception work is straightforward and there is always someone to clarify details if needed. Be prepared to work hard, and be available to guests any time you’re in a communal area. Junior and Eric are great, and we volunteered with the loveliest people! Barbarossa worked perfectly for our overseas trip.

The Barbarossa is a really cool place to camp out for a couple of months or so during your travels or as a middle ground looking for a more permanent move into the Netherlands. The hostel is a work in progress - some systems could be refined - but its a nice place to live, the work is fair, and it's a lovely city (the river is perfect for summer). Erick and Junior front the management team on the ground, and they're really great people. If you need something, they try to get it done. They also really try to encourage a good volunteer culture with BBQs, shared dinners, and movie nights.
