Barbarossa Hostel

Barbarossa Hostel, situated in a 150 year old warehouse building, offers its guests stylish, peaceful and centrally located accommodation in the historic centre of Nijmegen.

Located in a quiet square just off the main shopping street, the hostel makes a perfect base to enjoy the contemporary and youthful atmosphere the city has to offer.

Nijmegen is located close to the German border in the province of Gelderland, and is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back to the Roman Empire. Hosting a large university and several further education colleges, the city is full of students.

Nijmegen has always been known for its active political youth scene, which means you will likely be welcomed by open-minded and friendly individuals.

The city has access to numerous parks, green areas, trendy pubs, cafés with live music, concert halls and nightclubs. Large festivals are often held in Nijmegen, the most famous of which is the ‘Vierdaagse’ (Four Day March). This walking event is held together
with the “Zomerfeesten” (Summer festivities) and attracts around a million visitors of all ages.

Wintertime is typically windy, rainy and grey, with the occasional bit of snow and some beautifully crisp, sunny days. The perfect time to curl up with a book, watch a movie, or play some board games.

We like to think of our small hostel as one big family where everybody has the space to relax and do their own thing, but also participate to make Barbarossa a better place together. Common spaces include a kitchen, dining and living room, an outside roof terrace. We are looking for adventurous, open-minded and energetic volunteers to join our team. If you are looking to stay for the medium to long-term in a place like Nijmegen, volunteering at Barbarossa is an ideal opportunity to meet people from different walks of life, to discover Dutch culture and to have a great time in this historic and vibrant city. We don’t have preference on gender or sexual orientation, everybody is welcome. ☺ Speaking Dutch and/or German is a plus, but not mandatory.

I spent one of the best months of my life there, making new friends and exploring the city. Nijmegen is a really nice city where you can do everything by bike. The job was easy to learn, and the schedule was always respected. Joep and the new manager, Erick, are really good people who are constantly worried about how we are feeling and want the volunteers to have the best experience. They were flexible with all my requests to change days off and dates, allowing me and my girlfriend to travel around. In summary, I highly recommend the hostel after I had the best times there! =D

My experience in Barbarossa hostel was unforgettable! It was far more special than I could ever imagine.
Joep, the owner, is very friendly and flexible. Every time I asked for a favor he would do his best to try to guarantee it. In my first week there, he showed me the city to welcome me.
The workload is reasonable, and Joep ensures you never work more than the agreed-upon hours. He consistently checks in to make sure you're enjoying your time there.
The friends I made there will stay forever in my heart!! Nijmegen has left me with the most beautiful memories and I have a lot of gratitude <3

The month I spent in Barbarossa Hostel is an experience I will never forget. The job is divided among the volunteers and it consists of the morning check-out/cleaning shift and the afternoon check-in shift. Joep is an amazing host, always checking up on volunteers to make sure they are comfortable and that they have everything they need. From the first moment I felt at home and I have made wonderful friendships that I will treasure for life.

This was my first Worldpackers experience and I couldn't have asked for a better one. The hostel has a very good structure, the rooms, kitchen and other common areas are very comfortable and have everything you might need. Joep is very chill and sociable host. He's always in prompt to help you in whatever you need. The working hours are respected and we also have our 3 days off in a row, so that helps if you want to travel to other places. Nijmegen is a very special city and definitely have a place in my heart. Looking forward to go back in a near future :)

This was my first volunteer experience and it was absolutely worth it! The hostel is well located and Nijmegen is a very nice city. And you will have enough free time to explore other cities in the Netherlands as well :)
The shifts were not that difficult, except on particularly busy days.
Joep is a great host, always available for information and to give you tips and suggestions to make the most of your free time.
This experience is perfect if you want to meet people from all over the world and if you want to improve your English. I would recommend it to anyone!
