Birmingham Central Backpackers

We are a small independent backpacking hostel in the centre of Birmingham, we have a small team of cleaning staff that handle our day-to-day cleaning tasks as well as team of permanent reception staff which deal with front of house tasks and occasionally general cleaning.

All of our staff are former guests who fell in love with our quirky little place and eventually became a part of the team, if you decide to join the team you will be with fun young individuals from every corner of the globe! It is a great place to improve your english, learn about different cultures and maybe even make some life long friends!

We generally only accept volunteers for a period of 6 weeks or more as training is required to fulfil most of our positions. If you are looking to stay for an extended period of time we are more than happy to give you small 'vacations' occasionally to explore the rest of the UK! These are subject to approval as it depends on how busy the period is. Please note, that we do not take couples.

As both our staff and guests are from all corners of the globe you will be able interact with all kinds of people and learn about different cultures, food and languages. The common room is our social area providing the perfect opportunity to meet new people. As most of the staff live on the premises they will become your BCB family where you will prepare meals together and socialise. Birmingham itself is known as the birthplace of the industrial revolution and the city of a thousand trades. It is rich in culture offering amazing museums and art galleries to visit. Birmingham is located in the centre of Britain and is known as the heart of England. There are convenient train and bus connections so that you can not only explore Birmingham but the rest of Britain.

It was a good experience, the facilities are quite comfortable, the work almost always gets done quickly, and very little money is spent. Sometimes I felt more like a worker than a volunteer, but it's only a few hours of work, so it's fine for me.

The balance of the experience was certainly positive. I met cool people, I practiced English, I walked around the city and got to know other cities. Daiana, our headcleaner is a good person and does everything she can to help. The food is sufficient and the accommodation is good. Working hours are generally shorter than agreed. The negative points are: you will not feel like you are in a relationship of volunteer & hosts, but rather of a worker & boss. Perhaps because we feel like employees, a sense of community and cooperation is not created between the volunteers.

My experience was great and I really enjoyed my time here, everyone is amazing and very welcoming. The work is easy, and only a few hours each day.

the experience was great! There are only a few hours of work… our boss Dayana is sweet. Very helpful and helps us with everything she can. The location is very central too. Those were good days!

My stay at Birmingham Central Backpackers was good, although not what it could have been.
The location is really good, it has several pubs and clubs around, it's a very young and artistic neighborhood. It's also practically in the city center. The facilities are comfy and well equipped. The problem was really with the managing. Although the work is fairly " easy "(even if heavy sometimes), we always felt this tension. For many times I didn't feel treated as an adult, but instead, monitored. It just felt that I was there only to work.
