I really enjoyed my stay with Suzy and her family. She is a very lovely and cheerful person with whom I enjoyed spending time. I would have liked to stay much longer…. I immediately felt comfortable and welcome here. Thank you very much for this great experience.

A good experience looking after the horses. The hosts and stablehands are kind, respecting and encouraging of immersion in the local culture. The area boasts a wide variety of walks and has good access to buses for travelling to the larger nearby cities. A lovely experience which I would recommend for anyone who would like to learn about horses and experience Andalusian culture.

The place is beautiful but it’s remote and the work was a lot more than expected. Unfortunately I got sick at the end and had to leave early.

This is as an independent placement. We are used to volunteers enjoying their free time and the lovely space and pool we provide for volunteers, they usually go off exploring the local area (it’s a short 10-15 minute walk to the river or village where there are cafes, gardens, caves and a bus connection to the beach and motril and Granada city!). But Alice never left the complex- not even to buy food. We ended up having to buy all her food and drinks as she didn’t want to walk anywhere! We offered to take her out as did our stable hands but she usually declined. I bought tickets to the local water park as a thank you for her efforts but she left before it was used. We tried to communicate, provide support and we’re always asking if she was ok as she seemed to spend most of her free time just sleeping in her room.
It was a real shame as it’s a lovely area and although we are semi rural it’s very close to everything and easily accessible! We were very happy with Alice’s input to the project over the first 2 weeks of her stay but the lack of communication, sudden change in attitude, saying she were sick but still seemingly well enough to be enjoying the pool and playing with my daughter didn’t match up. The absolute neglect to animal care tasks at the end with no indication that she was unable to do it, led to one of our dogs being very poorly and her ‘mistakes’ cost me and my family over 600 euros.
We invite volunteers to be part of our project and help us ensure the future of our rescues are secure and yes, it’s physical work! It’s outdoor physical work mucking out, gardening and helping clean the spaces as discussed prior to accepting the position.
This is not a holiday destination! It’s a volunteer placement.
For me. It was the lack of ownership and communication at the end that we found so difficult and it left us in quite an awkward situation.
We hope something was learned and taken from this experience and thank Alice for her initial gardening work which was fantastic and wish her well moving on with her journey but would request that she improves her communication with any future hosts to avoid situations.

Sonja and me spend 1 week at Casa Sierra. We always felt really comfortebil and loved to be around the horses and dogs. Thank you to Suzy, her family and friends!
On some days the work was hard but also very varied, so it didn‘t get bored!
We had a great time there and Suzy was always there for us!
