De Helleborus: Eco-camping and food forest

Travelers from all around the world checkin to De Helleborus. Work with people from different cultures, meet other guests, learn permaculture principles, go explore the city of Groningen and swim lakes around.

Casper and Nienke (Dutch) the owners, are visionaries and devote their lives to developing De Helleborus. Expect hard work, a lot of energy, creative flow, and development. Camilo (Venezuelan/Spanish) the cook is also an artist and musician. He cooks fusion meals from all around the world. swashbuckling approach: intuitive, no unnecessary respect for traditional recipes/culinary rules and boundaries. Expect better food than in a restaurant. You can help with hospitality, building, or work in the vegetable garden. Three marvelous meals per day, drinks, nightly fires, and free bikes. Sleep in one of the accommodations, a shared dorm/tent, or a private tent.

I spent 3 weeks at De Helleborus and it was great😊 The host Casper and Nienke have made a great job at making this place so special and charming 😍 I'll definitely miss the honking geese passing on top of the site, the curious neighbouring horses watching you work and the little frogs greeting you in the morning 🥰 Working under Hannah supervision was a blast, she was always there for you and made it her goal to make you feel comfortable, sharing her wisdom, tasty meals and having fun 😁 Thank you all and wish you the best 😙

PS: They also have the best dry toilets I've ever seen 😉

I loved the opportunity to be out in nature all of the time while also being close enough to go into the city easily, as well as becoming friends with the other volunteers, however I felt like the host wasn’t flexible in how things are done and there was a lot of tension during my stay due to some arguments between the staff.

Despite my short stay, I can say that I always felt very welcome by the team and the rest of the volunteers, especially Hannah, in De Helleborus there are always many things to do and the work is quite a lot (but the agreed hours are respected) the campsite is very nice, the food is delicious and I enjoyed being able to talk to the guests during the campfire.

There is not much to do in the surroundings, but Groningen is about 30 minutes away by bike, it is undoubtedly a place to connect with nature and to be aware of the environmental impact that our daily activities have.

It feels a bit strange that you left us after 3 days with a bad message from home and than you stay weeks in Amsterdam? We could really used your help....

I had a great time at de Helleborus! I met many amazing people and learned a lot about sustainability and nature. The work was hard sometimes but mostly fun. If you're looking for a quiet place to calm down, this is the perfect thing for you

It was my first volunteer, it's a nice place, the people who work there made me feel very good, but I didn't feel comfortable with the hosts and the cook because of their treatment and when the agreements were not fulfilled, such as not having tents for the volunteers and sleep in the same tent as the guests, where they made me change beds and make me sleep in the laundry room on one occasion, among other inconveniences, I retired earlier. I thank you, because you always learn and I recommend it, but agreeing to what is established, consulting the rules beforehand and not for more than 2 weeks

We made a bed for you in the house because you refused to sleep in the tent. That this was a shared dorm tent that was clear from the beginning and in our form. See also our profile here on Worldplackers. Hope with you next volunteering you have a better understanding of English. Good luck!
