We were very disappointed by Annie’s attitude, and her lack of commitment and follow through. Reading her review, we’re further disappointed with the misinformation she’s sharing. For example that our sheep and goats don’t have “adequate facilities” (they graze in a field) or that there is no plan to adopt the dogs out (we are not a dog rescue org- these dogs live at the sanctuary). We also let everyone know that we don’t live on sanctuary ground. Annie interviewed with us a few months before her arrival so she may have forgotten, but all this information is shared openly.

Initially, Annie seemed to be enthusiastic and excited about the project. However after a few days, when she asked that we let a male volunteer go, we became suspicious. We took her report seriously and checked in with another volunteer who said that person is fine. Needless to say, this left us feeling uneasy and unsure whether her report was truthful or she just didn’t like the guy. Several days later, she began to demand that we increase the produce purchase for the volunteers. We are very transparent with everyone we interview (and it’s on our website and profile as well) that we are limited in how much food we can purchase due for in high costs of food in Hawaii. No where on our profile says we’re a “good farm.” We let everyone know they may need to supplement what we provide.

The following day, she sent a message that she decided to change her plans and leave 2 weeks earlier than her initial time commitment. In a following conversation, she revealed she never actually intended to stay the entire time. That was when we asked to leave.

We welcome volunteer constructive feedback, especially in person. But spreading untruthful information is simply misleading future volunteers and makes us wonder about the person’s intentions.
