Fellowship for Perpetual Growth, Hawai'i

Our project is a vegan permaculture and animal rescue non-profit, established in Mountain View, Hawai'i, in 2017. We have rescued dozens of pasture animals from the 2018 lava flow and Big Island Dairy closure. We also have a couple of gardens and fruit trees all over the property, which are beginning to produce. Our mission is to teach food independence and treat animals with love and respect, without the intention of commercial exploitation.

There is a calming energy to the sanctuary that people remark on when they arrive. You are surrounded by nature, yet there is still good access to town for supplies.

The staff and volunteers operate on a foundation of respect: Respect for the land, respect for the vegetation, respect for the animals, and respect for the everyone who keeps the sanctuary running. We require a minimum 4-week commitment from the volunteers. Please note that the map on this page does not take you to our location. We are located in Mountain View, Hawai'i (not Mountain View, California).

I loved every single animal and made some great friends. Rob is a good man and the sanctuary needs a lot of help. Some facilities for volunteers and the cleanliness of the place need to be improved. The only big problem is mobility, as the sanctuary is in the middle of nowhere and buses on B.I are few and far between. If you don't have transportation, it's VERY difficult to get around the island and do any sightseeing. Someone recommended me to buy a car and then sell it (if you are staying for a long time this may be the best option). The area of the island doesn't feel very safe for 👍🏻.

Unfortumately, i felt nothing but pain in realizing my time there only contributed to a possible on going mismanagement of animals...and 'staff'.
I was misguided from the beginning thinking managers lived on site. Unfortunately, they do not, and i feel that is a real downfall to animals. The facilities are very run down, and not adequate for animals. The sheep hobble due to lack of dry facility to allow their feet to heal from pododermattis, dogs that don't seem to have an adoption plan set up, eat their excrement due to stress cope mechanism. One is beyond help and is suffering :'((

We were very disappointed by Annie’s attitude, and her lack of commitment and follow through. Reading her review, we’re further disappointed with the misinformation she’s sharing. For example that our sheep and goats don’t have “adequate facilities” (they graze in a field) or that there is no plan to adopt the dogs out (we are not a dog rescue org- these dogs live at the sanctuary). We also let everyone know that we don’t live on sanctuary ground. Annie interviewed with us a few months before her arrival so she may have forgotten, but all this information is shared openly.

Initially, Annie seemed to be enthusiastic and excited about the project. However after a few days, when she asked that we let a male volunteer go, we became suspicious. We took her report seriously and checked in with another volunteer who said that person is fine. Needless to say, this left us feeling uneasy and unsure whether her report was truthful or she just didn’t like the guy. Several days later, she began to demand that we increase the produce purchase for the volunteers. We are very transparent with everyone we interview (and it’s on our website and profile as well) that we are limited in how much food we can purchase due for in high costs of food in Hawaii. No where on our profile says we’re a “good farm.” We let everyone know they may need to supplement what we provide.

The following day, she sent a message that she decided to change her plans and leave 2 weeks earlier than her initial time commitment. In a following conversation, she revealed she never actually intended to stay the entire time. That was when we asked to leave.

We welcome volunteer constructive feedback, especially in person. But spreading untruthful information is simply misleading future volunteers and makes us wonder about the person’s intentions.
