I had a great time volunteering at Fortel! Everyone was extremely kind, helpful, and welcoming. The work is very fair and I enjoyed it: mostly cleaning/housekeeping work with some reception. It’s well worth it for the trade of getting to live in one of the best places in San Juan!

I felt very safe as a solo female. I felt comfortable walking alone as well which was important to me. Ubers are very cheap in San Juan! It’s also easy to scooter to the beach and I recommend doing that if you don’t want to walk. There’s SO much to do in Puerto Rico and you will love it.

My experience here goes well beyond words! Angelica and her team are very welcoming and were very helpful along the way. I got to stay in my own private dorm, help guests from time to time but most of the job is housekeeping work which were common tasks plus the experience of exploring a beautiful island and making meaningful connections. One of my favorite things about Fortel Hostel is the location which is directly in the heart of Old San Juan; Angelica and her team have made made me feel welcomed since day one. I’m truly grateful that Angelica got to be my first Host on WP. Thank you!

The nice things about this experience are the location of the hostel, getting space to yourself, and having a mostly straightforward routine when it comes to work. Tasks included cleaning and changing beds. Often I received packages for the restaurant and communicated with maintenance staff (plumbers, AC tech, etc), so I do think volunteers benefit from knowing Spanish before working here. The hostel is not particularly social, and the important thing to know is you will be mostly on your own, as there is only one volunteer at a time and Angelica communicates with you through text.

Fortel is a small and charming hostel. It was perfect for my first solo trip! - this exchange was sustainable, fair, and light hearted. It's in a great location and has accessible amenities, perfect for remote work.
